That she had a very entitled attitude and was often rude to the German coaches

…because her longevity can be largely attributed to her being able to compete for a country that is no longer under the Russian Empire/Soviet rule
I think her longevity is because she is the last vestige of Soviet experiments in athletic genetic/drug manipulation. She grows back broken tendons like it’s nothing. I’d love to see what her DNA makeup looks like.

Well, also because she’s not needing to do the level of gymnastics generally expected out of the top 5 teams just to make it onto the World and Olympic teams.

There is that, but equally she was legitimately top 10 in the world on an event, well past her 40th birthday. While she almost certainly wouldn’t have been taken as a vault specialist for any top 5 team in eg Rio, the only team who couldn’t have used her score was the US. And she was a better vaulter than anyone GB, Japan or arguably China brought that year. It’s really only the last 4 years max that she stopped being competitive.

I think this is my favorite of Chuso’s floor

she was far more engaged in this routine than in her '91 routine when she won gold. Her Shushunova is sky high and so is that double pike

Is part of her decision to continue not knowing what else to actually do with her life besides gymnastics?

She said she’ll continue as long as her body allows her to, because why not?

Why does she need to do anything else with her life besides gymnastics? She’s married, she’s raised a child to adulthood, she’s coached, she’s traveled all over the world. What else does she need to do? Sport is her career. When she stops competing she’ll most likely keep coaching and doing clinics.

I mean, the same could be said for the supervisor at a department store that’s been with the company for 23 years. At least she’s enjoying herself.

I don’t think I remembered that she ever did a full-in (vs. half in/half out or even more of a full-out in some way)

Her amplitude, technique, and massive D-score on beam is such that she certainly could beat Simone – but she hasn’t really shown herself to be the paragon of consistency on this apparatus especially, so I wouldn’t place a bet on it.

Comparing this routine to Simone’s day 1 routine, I have Simone ahead by 7 tenths (+0.8 on E, -0.1 on D). That said, it wouldn’t be impossible for Simone to throw away her edge with one of her old runaway landing errors, or for Listunova to catch up by avoiding some of the big wobbles and pause deductions.

When she was Jr and a young Sr, she showed promise artistically. I remember watching a video of her beam routine and now I think that I have not seen an athlete regress artistically as much.

She showed that she can use her body very well but now…not even a style that she can call her own - just a paint-with-numbers type of choreography.
