She posted a double full but did a 1.5 and dropped to her seat on it.

What do you all think happened?

Looks like she came onto the table too low and crunchy and rightfully decided there was no way she could do a DTY.

Right, like if there's already a YDP, at least one Cheng, and a DTY (is that Shilese's vault?), then there's no need for Suni to vault.

Yes, Shilese vaults a DTY. And if those 4 are on the team whoever is in the fifth spot would have at minimum a DTY, so Suni wouldn't be vaulting unless there was a huge catastrophe.

Wait though — If, by nationals, Suni is scoring 15.0 on bars (which is realistic given that she has 0.6 in upgrades already planned), 14.9 on beam (already did that) and up to, say, 13.9 on floor, a DTY would make her competitive with Jones.

Which means she could theoretically be a spoiler for the AA... just saying.

She would do the vault (and probably floor) in prelims only of course.

So this poses an interesting question. If Suni and Jones and Skye are all in the mid 57 AA range at trials….does the 5th athlete on the team even get to complete?

Where does the 13.9 come from? I hadn’t heard she was planning on upgrading her tumbling.

Theoretically you could let all 4 battle it out in prelims and have the 5th member do vault and floor in finals. Not the strategy I'd go with personally, but it's a possibility.

It comes down to who wins AA at trials between Suni and Shilese. One of them has to be demoted to a UB+BB role in qualifying to make room for the 5th person on the team doing VT+FX. Unless all the contenders flop at trials, that 5th person is going to be someone with medal potential on VT and/or FX. You can't leave them out in qualifying and throw away possible medals.

Simone and Shi are AA contenders though. If they don’t both do all 4 in Qualifications that’s automatically giving up on the possibility of a AA medal. It’s a quandary. Everyone on the team has potential to be in a final.

Lineups won't be decided until after Podium Training at the Olympics, so that would be the real final test.

1.3.4. The final line-up determination will be announced a minimum of 24 hours prior to Qualifications (Competition I). This determination will be made by the traveling High Performance Team Leader and credentialed coaching staff.

I wonder if it will be Memmel or Sacramone who travels to Paris. It doesn't specify technical or strategic lead here.
