Yes. I don’t think ASCAP applies to educational settings. But no idea how that applies internationally.
Yeah, I don’t understand how this works when so many international skaters use American music and they’re not having issues. Most music artists don’t even own their own music because the record label does, so I don’t think just asking the artists works. That’s exactly why there’s licensing that covers record labels themselves.

Very possible. Out of my group of gym fans who’ve been to almost every worlds since 2015 (Doha and Kitakyushu were the exceptions), no one is considering going except me.

Jakarta is not a touristy place which may deter international attendees. It has a growing tourism industry but it mostly gets diplomatic and business travelers.

People who went to Doha said it wasn’t all that different. Minor things mostly.
I went and there were no issues for me as a spectator. As far as the dress code goes, I don't have it, so I don't flaunt it. But there was no need for head covering, and jeans and a T shirt were fine.

There are countries where the sexes are segregated at certain events. Many years ago in Iran, women were arrested for trying to attend a MAG event.

However, I can understand having questions about it, as there was a lot of fear mongering and downright misinformation coming from folks with a lot of social media reach who were upset about the choice.

I'll likely go to Jakarta if possible. It is more liberal than Doha. But it's no paradise for gay or women's rights, either.

One theory I heard about the format was that it allows more countries to get medals. Like if China and Japan can only send 3 guys each, more medal chances for other countries.

I still hate it.

Thank goodness for that 🥳

Oh thank GOD.

This one change redeems the entire 2025 year. There’s a lot of competitions going on next year but with Worlds so small it was going to be an anticlimactic ending. Most of the people competing internationally all year wouldn’t be at Worlds. Now there’s more of a finale worth working towards at the end.

The only downside is that I’ve now crossed out an entry on my con list for deciding whether to attend 🙃

Thank goodness! I know what they were thinking but, it is was such a bad idea.

I wonder how much the organizers are pulling their hair out now?
My guess is that they shrank the quotas to attract a host city, there is no way they would have moved forward with this change without Jakarta’s blessing.

That's wild to me. How does that work at the junior/novice levels?
At the non-elite level in Australia it’s not left up to chance (and rightly so, as police actually do randomly visit businesses here and ask to see that they have a licence for the music they are playing). Clubs pay a quarterly fee to a licensing company and that covers them for music they play within the club (even just for fun while training) and for non club activities like in-house competitions and displays.
For sanctioned competitions (not in-house or friendlies) there is a performance fee for the music ($1.54) and that’s just included in the competition fee and paid to the licensing company.

At the elite level, athletes have to upload proof that they have sorted out an internationally-suitable licence for their music at the point where they make themselves available for selection. They won’t be selected if they don’t have the right to use their music. They are strongly encouraged to secure appropriate licence before starting to do their choreo, and Gymnastics Australia recommends that they use ClicknClear who exist to sort that sort of thing out thoroughly. So it’s the athlete’s cost and responsibility, but GA does its due diligence before selecting the athlete.
