Purely speculative, but I was working on the assumption Ellie would be looking to do AA if she came back. For the reason you mention, and also because this ‘quad’ the formats mean there aren’t many opportunities for individual specialists. We’ve already had the year that’s an individual only worlds and Euros. Every competition from now on has a formal team competition except possibly next year’s Euros (there wouldn’t usually be one in the pre-Olympic year but for worlds qualification process they have to do some kind of team ranking, I’m not sure how it’ll work though).

Although she injured herself on beam (I think she scraped down the side doing a tuck back and some of her foot stayed on the beam and some didn’t…), its usually feet and ankles. Which doesn’t really lend herself to a FX/VT specialist.

Which is a shame, because her at full strength and the Gadirova twins would give GB amazing VT and FX rotations.

Jennifer Gadirova - Floor Exercise

Acro:

1 x F (double layout)
1 x E (tucked full-in)
1 x D (double tuck)
1 x B (front layout)

Total Acro DV - 1.7

Dance:

1 x D (full twisting switch leap)
3 x C (full twisting split jump, switch ring leap, full twisting split leap)

Total Dance DV - 1.3

Total DV - 3.0

CV

front layout stepout + round off + back handspring + double tuck (B - indirect D) = 0.1 CV

Total CV - 0.1

Dismount Bonus

double tuck (D) - 0.2

CR

Dance Passage - switch ring leap to full twisting split leap
Salto with 360 LA turn - tucked full-in
Double Salto - double layout
Salto Backward and Forward - front layout stepout, double tuck

Total D - 3.0 + 0.1 + 0.2 + 2.0 = 5.3

Elements or Connections Downgraded

None (I would want to review the switch ring leap, but given the angle and quality of the video I gave the benefit of the doubt in terms of credit and deductions)

Total D - 3.0 + 0.1 + 0.2 + 2.0 = 5.3

Deductions

double layout
(leg separation) 0.1
(failure to maintain stretched position) 0.1

tucked full-in
(flexed feet) 0.1
(leg separation → greater than shoulder width) 0.3 (very briefly as she begins the second salto)
(body posture on landing / chest low) 0.1
(step on landing) 0.1

(adjustment) 0.1 ^ (After bringing her feet together after the full-in, it looks like she slightly goes off balance before moving into the choreography. Minor error and likely not visible or noticeable from a different angle)

full twisting switch leap
(body posture) 0.1

front layout
(bent knee) 0.1

double tuck
(flexed feet) 0.1
(body posture on landing / chest forward and low) 0.1
(large step on landing) 0.3

Artistry
  • Insufficient complexity or creativity of movements throughout exercise (0.1) ^ (While the routine is well choreographed, I found the movements to be a bit one note. By comparison, Jessica’s routine with the low to floor choreography both to open and close the routine created a good contrast to the remainder of dance in the routine.)
  • Poor corner choreography / lack of variety (0.1)
Total Deductions - (1.6 - 1.8) 8.2 - 8.4 / Actual 8.400

The way you describe that makes it sound absolutely horrifying.

It’s true though, Ellie’s feet and ankles don’t really lend themselves to a long term VT/FX role. She’s done some pretty decent bars in her time, but I don’t see her wanting to try and focus on that.

I’m going to the British this weekend. It’ll be my first competition since 2019 worlds so I’m excited but nervous about being around so many people again. Based on recent public transport experience I’ll probably be the only person wearing a mask in the arena.

The ticketing has been an absolute mess. I ordered e-tickets and the initial invoice said that if they weren’t attached (they weren’t) to contact them with two weeks to go. When I asked them to resend the e-tickets last week they replied with the message that my tickets had been refunded! Thankfully this was corrected and hopefully I have valid tickets now but it took several e-mail exchanges to sort. A friend ordered physical tickets and when she e-mailed they said they’d arrive by Thursday, really not on when that’s the first day of competition and tickets have been on sale for months. Now BG have tweeted to say that physical tickets (non-recorded delivery) will be sent as e-tickets instead. Oh dear!

Is anyone else going?

I have been taking photos at comps since 2010 worlds but since it’s been so long I will just be watching this time. My hands won’t know what to do with themselves! I’m excited to see the Gadirovas compete in person for the first time. It’s wild that they are Olympic medalists before competing at their first senior British (they didn’t compete at the Nov 2021 edition).

I’ve been dipping in and outer the weekend.
Impressed with the performance quality of the espoir gymnasts on FX. Not seen enough of the juniors really, catching up on BG score. Seniors tomorrow, so looking forward to that

Will be interested to see some videos when they come out! Is BG posting YT vids for free?

It was stunning.

I’ve had a really rough day so I’ll only say one thing….in person it is amazing how far ahead the Gadirovas are in terms of presence, artistry, presentation, performance. Whatever you want to call it, they have it and it is much more obvious in an arena than on TV (and it is still pretty darn clear on TV).

I’m judging the top 6 now. To me, barring injury, and barring anyone random that somehow breaks through (Amelie?!) that’s the worlds team, plus the alternate, absent injury.

Picking who doesn’t make it into the main team will be a tough one.

I haven’t even looked at the scores yet, other than the overall standings. But methinks the Gadirovas got some gifts on beam. And I actually have both Becky and GMF beating Jen in the AA, and a much tighter race for first between Odine and Jess. Just judging Alice now.

Alice is only doing 7 skills on bars. She’s counting an A straddle cast.

Has Alice changed coaches? Had injury? I can’t remember her looking this rough. Her form on her basics has shot to pieces. You could park a bus between her hands in her BHS. And I gave the switch full but man i’ve never seen her form so bad.

Skinner’s isn’t even this bad.
