I cannot believe she is 50. That is epic

Living legend Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan told International Gymnast Online that she encourages fans to help her celebrate her 50th birthday on Thursday and rally her performance at the World Cup of Tashkent which starts Wednesday.

“I look forward to competing in Tashkent,” the eight-time Olympian said after competing at last week’s Asian Championships in Jecheon, Korea, where she advanced to the vault final. “So, root for me and cheer for me, and I will be very, very pleased.”

Chusovitina is the only gymnast to compete at eight Olympic Games, an astounding landmark she achieved through her performances at every Games starting with the Barcelona 1992 Olympics, when she was a member of the gold medal-winning Unified Team, through Tokyo 2020. She is also the only gymnast to be inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame while still competitively active, an honor she earned in 2017.

Although Chusovitina did not qualify for last summer’s Paris Olympics, she intends to compete as long as the sport inspires and fulfills her. She won her latest major title, gold on vault, at the World Cup of Baku in March.

This week’s World Challenge Cup that her country is hosting, coinciding with her landmark birthday, gives her fans yet another reason to applaud the ageless, appreciative Chusovitina.

“I love gymnastics, and it brings me pleasure,” she told International Gymnast Online. “Therefore, as long as gymnastics brings me pleasure, I will participate in it. I want to say a huge thank-you to everyone who roots for me, cheers for me and helps me move forward. It’s very nice. I love everyone, and I kiss and hug them.”

What a way to mark your half century.

Uzbekistan weren't on the world challenge cup circuit in the past couple of years. I didn't pick up on that or the dates when the series was first announced, but it can't be a coincidence that they picked this particular week?

Happy Birthday to Oksana!

Who would have thought that when we saw baby Chuso competing at Cottbus in 1989, for the Soviet team, and in the era where 18-19 was considered "old" for a WAG gymnast, that she would still be competing 36 years later at 50!

I turned 4 in 1989. I turn 40 this year. She's been competing almost my entire lifetime. She's been competing for more than twice as long as many gymnasts have even been alive.

I'm 54. I watched one of her first international competitions on live TV.
I'm a few years older than you both, and even I was young then!

I think that's the competition where I first saw her. I wouldn't have picked her to be a long-term competitor even in terms of those days, never mind a few decades later.

She qualified 2nd to the vault final earlier today, behind Georgieva. So as long as there are no disasters in the next day, we will have an elite international gymnast in their 50s!
Excellent!

In case anyone else was wondering (I was), Georgieva was born in 2006, the first year Chusovitina competed for Germany.
