What is France doing this time that would make her want to switch?
The same old 💩

Also, in the background to all this is the fact that Mrs Colas and Mrs Nemour HATE each other. And last week, kaylia gave an interview detailing the abusive coaching at Avoine. Which is exactly what the French fed accused them of in the first place.

It certainly places an interesting conundrum. The French fed has been placed as the villains in the whole Nemour saga. But what if the French fed was right (even if it is largely incompetent) and simply refused to endorse coaching practices it didn’t agree with, even if it meant losing Kaylia. What if the rules and restrictions it’s placing on Elena and Perla are to minimise abusive coaching?

How would we feel as a fanbase if in a couple of years, Maggie Haney emerges with a top prospect. USAG can’t force the gymnast to change gyms, but it can prohibit coaches from being present on competition podiums, training camps etc. Because all that’s happened here is the equivalent of a Maggie Haney gymnast being invited to a rehabilitation camp in the US islands but told her coach cannot accompany her. We would all be applauding USAG for taking a tough stance. And if this gymnast’s mother starting ranting on social media about how the federation didn’t deserve her daughter and threatening to switch countries? We’d call her a psycho gymmom!

So I am absolutely not in the know of the basics of either situation but if it is as MaryClare describes, moving countries to maintain an abusive coaching relationship is messed up. If an adult athlete chooses to work with Maggie Haney-esque coaching, fine. A parent keeping their kid with an abusive coach is sick shit. As long as the federation isn't labeling coaches bad just because they don't play the game the way the fed wants. If Aimee Boorman had been labeled because she stopped taking Simone to camps and Martha wanted her there, for example. Without all the details, it is possible both sides might have valid points or both be awful.

Tldr: I know nothing about any of the main characters in this drama.

I’m sure it’s Portugal from her mother’s side and Hungary from her father’s. Colas sounds pretty Hungarian.
'Colas' absolutely doesn't sound Hungarian. It could be that portuguese part of Elena's ancestry, but could be also French (or Italian, or Spanish).
All the rumors I could find are mentioning Poland and/or Portugal, this is the first time I see people talking about Hungary as one of Colas possibilities.

I sadly think it's exactly the case here. IIRC French federation wanted a centralized national training system and wanted Chirilcenco (former Nemour and current Colas coach) to coach there. He refused as he did not want to leave his club (Avoine-Beaumont), and that's how the feud started.
Also I find it interesting that Colas Mother mentions Youna, who actually left Chirilcenco because of abusive coaching. Some background:
ETA: That 'centralized training system' part was just before Tokyo so maybe around 2018/2019? Youna left Chirilcenco in 2010 or 2011, so French federation knew Chirilcenco is an abusive coach, and they still wanted him to coach their national team.
ETA 2: and Nemour's mother fought hard so her daughter could continue training with Chirilcenco, as does Colas mother now.

Avoine is very cultish and paradise for crazy gym moms who don't see beyond their exceptionally talented daughters. It's wild to me how the French fed has managed to be painted as the villain, after all they just wanted Kaliya to take more time to heal from an injury. Especially in this day and age where protecting young Elite athletes actually sounds like a reasonable thing to do. Kaliya was extremely lucky but we'll see about Elena. Both mothers think the coaching style is fine as long as their daughters succeed.
