I agree, and I don’t think some of the wilder speculation is helpful. (not here, but I’ve seen some very odd “theories” elsewhere about her personal life).
I just wish the selection process was more transparent overall.

She’s so adorable.

Imagine how bad BG would look if Becky started vaulting because of the selection procedures, and then got injured.

Maybe someone like Alice is pissed though that Becky can only train two events; and that if she had had that same luxury, she would have improved her beam and bars by more. I guess it’s not fair however way you slice it.

But her point would be “if I gave up floor and vault for a whole quad then yeah I could have gotten a 15 on beam”.

Becky only became world medal worthy on bars when her feet packed in and giving up floor and vault became a necessity. She was good on bars in 08 and 09 but you wouldn’t have put her in line for any bars medals.

What makes this whole situation very strange is that it seems like Becky is learning something important NOW. Three months out. If this was such a mind blowing and devastating bit of news for her, then why didn’t she receive it 2 years ago when she could have done something about it.

GB has known for the whole quad that a +1 spot was unlikely. If it is indeed to do with selection then why are Becky and Frags only hearing about this now?

This is why I have a hard time seeing how it’s the selectors suddenly announcing this, and not just Becky giving her teammates who went to Euros a few days to celebrate and enjoy before she expressed her feelings about how she is affected by the lack of a +1.

I mean, there’s no limit to incompetence in gymnastics, but if their plan is to put team first and just let the chips fall for the individual rounds, or require AA, waiting until now to share that is literally crazy.

She was more of a finalist than a medallist in the 09-12 quad I agree, but even then, by the time Becky let up on other events she was still very clearly someone who was going to be a threat if she hit. Look at the scores she was getting last quad for hit routines. The international judges were absolutely willing to throw her the numbers, when she actually hit. That is a league better than Alice on any event. If Alice gets to the stage where she’s got a good chance of winning a medal if she stays on, then she’ll have a point.

But yes, whatever the selection criteria are going to be, they should’ve been communicated well in advance. I don’t think there’s anything intrinsically shady about asking for insurance routines, provided the requirements are sensible (and there seems no reason to trust in BG that they are). But they should be clear.

I also suspect they were probably hoping for one of the Gadirovas to qualify an individual spot. And it was at minimum a realistic possibility. It may well have happened if Jennifer had been there too.

Well, now I feel bad for Alice too. If she has the meet of her life and pulls out a top score, everyone is going to still side eye it because of her connections.

(Wonder what equipment Simone has been training on? And, outside of bars, (i guess? Based on the tweet anyway) does the equipment have a big effect?)

Why aren’t they doing the Olympic Trial on the Olympic bars that they purchased for the Olympics?

And why didn’t they tell all the gymnasts what bars they were using more than a week before the competition?
