She was, but I think only 3 people vaulted. Pease had a bad DTY, and Stassi only did a Y1.5 and Omelianchik. Wong basically won by default

Not because she wouldn’t deserve it. I gave 8.3 but I was debating one of the tenths so I was very close to giving 8.4.

She’s so clean.

I need her to get coaches who can keep her clean while increasing her difficulty. We deserve pretty gymnastics, dammit.

Yeah, she was the beneficiary of so much luck to make the teams in 2022 and 2023.

I just do not see the reasoning why so many Florida athletes train elite there. They’re not equipped to do so.

Being "perfect alternate material" over 3 Olympic Quads for Team USA is certainly not "failing".

She went from "Pod" to "Cheng" before. Gotta love the code giving a 1.4 point differential to those vaults when there's actually no difference in the shape, just a difference of 1 twist.

I am very pleased Hezly is leading and had a good competition. I enjoyed Gabby Hardie. Bummer for Claire Pease and Jayla Hang, but I hope they rebound on Sunday.

That's not correct. There's also an E-score, and piked a Cheng gets you deducted, sometimes very heavily. And a full twist difference is a big deal — worth about 0.8 usually.

To be fair I think all coaching teams have tried to see what Wong might be able to do, but solid and sadly backup AAer is the role her kind of gymnastics in this era has relegated her to. She was easily going to Tokyo in the McCallum spot if not for her beam meltdown, but the legacy of the McCallum spot (I love her and am so glad a form a technique girl won the spot over Skinner) is one of a kind of randomness, lots of athletes could have easily fit that role. But that was Wong's spot to lose and she lost it.

piking a Cheng gets you deducted, sometimes very heavily

It's far less deducted than other vaults, since there's no downgrade to the D-score. Sloppy Chengs have been getting overscored for far too long, even aside from the piking issue, and it's a huge problem in the code that other vaults get a ridiculous .6 downgrade for being slightly too piked, while the Cheng always keeps its full value.

I really think she was capable of more! Certainly not an event specialist, but the quality of her work in 2021 really was outstanding, but unfortunately held back by GAGE being GAGE. She had the same lightness in her work that Gabby Douglas had circa London. Her gymnastics has become so much more pedestrian since she has gone to college and worked exclusively with the UF coaches.

There really isn't a precedent for athletes working with new Elite coaches while still in NCAA, but I wish more athletes would consider it. What I wouldn't give though to see what KJ Kindler could do with an elite athlete.

2024 as well after Shilese, Skye, and Kayla went down. Instead, a virtually untested 16-year-old walked on to get an Olympic gold medal with none of her QF scores contributing and being benched for TFs.

While I’m sure she’ll end up at Florida with all the other elites, I would love to see Pease go to Oklahoma and not defer until 2028 just to see what an OU coached elite would look like. If anyone knows how to work the code it’s KJ Kindler.

Maybe Stassi will try to do college and elite at the same time? That would be interesting.

I’m pretty sure KJ doesn’t allow her athletes to pursue NCAA and elite simultaneously.
