holy cow. Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were on the plane. Was Maxim not travelling with his parents. This is horrible and horrible for him. this is what I found. Some Russian news agencies reported that Shishkova and Naumov’s son Maxim Naumov, who competed for the United States, may have also been on the flight, but the Daily Mail quoted another competitor, Anton Spiridonov, as saying he had seen the younger Naumov fly out two days earlier.

sorry also found:
Russian world champion figure skaters Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov are among the casualties from the devastating plane crash in Washington, DC, according to Russian state media.

Their son, Maxim Naumov, is also feared to have been on board.
Russia’s Mash news outlet published a list of 13 skaters, many of them the children of Russian emigres to the US, who it said were believed to have been on the plane.
Inna Volyanskaya, a former skater who competed for the Soviet Union, was also reported to have been on board, TASS reports. She was a coach at the Washington figure skating club, according to its website.

The US figure skating governing body confirmed that athletes, coaches and family members were on the plane, returning from a national development camp and the championships in Wichita.

more recent news:
'The couple was returning to DC from Wichita after attending a skating championship on Flight 5342. However, their son, Maxim Naumov, 23, who is a prominent skater for Team USA was not travelling with his parents despite competing at the US Figure Skating Championships in Kansas City.

Deaths of Shishkova and Naumov senior are being reported in media here. No mention of Maxim being onboard. Surely it’s not hard to confirm his location? We hope and pray.

Perhaps this incident needs a separate thread to the competition

RIA Novosti is quoting John Maravilla as saying what I would translate as “it is not my place to name anyone, but there were around 14 skaters plus parents and coaches on that flight”.

Apparently there had been a development camp following the competition.

It is for obvious political reasons, front and centre in the Russian news.

The crashed happened right about 9 pm local time. I forced myself to go to bed at 11:30 and hadn't seen the news of Shishkova and Naumov. I have friends who work for local DC news organizations as well as DC Fire and everyone's been working frantically overnight, but because it's overnight it's been challenging to coordinate and get ahold of people. I imagine we'll know more about the younger Naumov's whereabouts soon, as well as who else associated with US Figure Skating was on the flight. I assume they were all with Washington FSC.

DC Fire (which is leading search and rescue) says no survivors. Not surprised given the fireball. If anyone manages to survive that, the water is only 35 degrees and there's a fair bit on ice on the river. Hypothermia would have set in quickly.

Washington Post reports that the younger Maxim was not on the flight, and that about 20 skaters and coaches were on the plane.

I was about to say the same thing. We just came out of an arctic freeze, so there are still ice sheets on the river. Even without that, given the night and the strong currents, any survivors would've easily drowned.

And the anniversary of the Florida flight that crashed into the 14th Street Bridge into the Potomac in 1982 (that my father was supposed to be on) just passed.

I feel terrible for everybody involved, but local news interviewed a man waiting at National whose wife was on the flight and it's rough seeing a man who is realizing that he's a widower in real time.

They're finding debris down at National Harbor and South of the Wilson Bridge. The current and tides are going to make an already tricky recovery operation much more challenging.

Horrible tragedy. Even worse as this is the second time in the US skating community.

They were so, so, young.
