Talladega College has cut its gymnastics program effective July 31, according to WVTM.

The college became the second HBCU to sponsor women’s gymnastics with its inaugural season in 2024. With this decision the program will end after only one competitive season, leaving Fisk and Wilberforce—which will begin competition in the 2026 season—as the lone remaining HBCU gymnastics teams. The program competed in eight meets in 2024 and qualified six individuals to USAG nationals in April.

This is a developing story. We will update this post as more information becomes available.

I was wondering about who would transfer...
then remembered that the window to enter the portal was closed, so they are screwed for now

When a coach leaves (or a program is cut I presume) the normal rules for entering the portal do not apply. They can enter past the normal deadlines. The issue would be that many programs have already picked up other transfers and may not have spots to offer those entering at this point

Pretty much all HBCUs (save maybe Howard or Spelman) end up having financial issues so it really isn’t surprising. They shouldn’t have started a program to begin with. The financial issues are why I didn’t really look at HBCUs seriously. I couldn’t afford to not get my financial aid on time.

Any HBCU outside of the Black Ivy League tends to struggle financially. And even Howard had issues. A couple of years ago the students staged a protest because of the conditions of the dorms among other things.
