Men New Men's program update. (Lots of fine but busybody stuff, but the first bit is total BS)

Here's the latest update from the men's technical committee.

To me, this is completely unethical and an abdication of responsibility.

In the previous Code Art 5.1.c highlighted that “when in doubt, give the benefit of that doubt to the gymnast”. This often led to inaccurate and therefore unfair scores. Judges are being directed that, if in doubt, not to give recognition and to leave the opportunity for coaches to inquire.

Remember that lame situation at Worlds where Malone got no credit during qualifications for being just a little pikey in his full twisting Jaeger on high bar? That rule has been improved a little, but still bad. It gets D value and a 0.3 deduction. rolling eyes. At least it can get connection bonus. But why are we making such specific rules. Put a piked Jaeger full in the code as a D and give it that value and call it a day.

To me, this is most likely a message meant to the judges that they’re not doing a good enough job and not judging well enough. It will backfire, though, because everyone and their coach will start enquiring everything, so men’s judging will take as long as women’s beam judging.

On that note, since gymnasts do not get a judging script, if they inquire the D-score, do they usually provide any details? Like would malone’s coach have indicated that the full-twisting jaeger should be reviewed? Or will the whole routine be reviewed anyway?

I hate to see the MAG technical committee following the path of the WAG TC. Bad for gymnastics.

At FIG competitions, I think the whole routine is always reviewed. There are lots of cases in WAG where the element that was in question was not the focus of a score change — the WTC reviews the routine and downgrades elements that were both intended and awarded elsewhere in the exercise. I don't remember that happening in MAG, but it could because they generally do review the whole exercise.
