Stupid question alert (because I don’t follow MAG very heavily)

It seems that due to the US bonus system some athletes are getting 1-3 points in bonus. Is there any concern that the bonus system could result in selecting the wrong athletes for an international team?

I guess nationals scoring (which seems to overlook some execution errors) could cause the same issues anyways.
So they bonus system is in place to encourage athletes to do the difficulty needed to be successful internationally and compete for a team medal. Despite having strong teams, the US Men simply lacked the start values necessary.
In the past athletes would not put difficult skills in because they were too risky and a major mistake on it would drop down in the standings. So they left these skills out…playing it safe isn’t enough to win a medal.
So to convince gymnasts to do the difficulty the points system was put in place to reward those gymnasts attempting the difficulty. Even if there are errors on a skill, at least it was performed, and with the bonus points in place doesn’t damage their overall score too harshly.

That said, USAG has both standings WITH the bonus and standings WITHOUT the bonus. They will pick the teams based off of WITHOUT bonus, that said, those doing the difficult skills well are getting the bonus AND scoring well when the bonus is taken away due to the D score being higher than it would normally.

Does that make sense?

I think it was the right move to make because USA MAG needed to change something in order to change the results. I think they have a strong chance to make it into the top 3 this year at Worlds of course without Russia present that helps tremendously. The added difficulty will also help, with the hope that witht he athletes performing the harder skills more, that they get more consistent with them.

I wonder if they would take Curran if he hits again tonight.
While his pbars is a great set, it’ll be unlikely they take him as he doesn’t contribute anywhere else. If they are going to go with a one event specialist to contribute to team score I see it happening more on pommels.
If you take away the bonus, Phillips routine was a 6.9/8.450=15.350 but that is with domestic scoring.
He could make parallel bars finals, but it’ll be difficult to get a medal.
The best team is really Hong, Malone, Moldeaur, Whittenburg, and Wiskus if you look at 5-4-3/5-3-3
Fred Richard is definitely someone that has the high start values across several pieces to be beneficial to the team, so he is one to watch.

If it were an individual Worlds it would make sense, but with a team event AND high chance of Olympic qualification/team medal this year with Russia out, I anticipate it being highest scoring team, and with 6 apparatus needed to fill amongst 5 athletes, Phillips is a challenge to take.

are the top 3 teams automatically qualified for the olympics again this worlds?

Yes.

China, Japan, USA, and Great Britain are likely the favorites for the three berths.

Do men have a harder time squaring their hips? The splits on floor I’m seeing right now don’t look like good women’s splits. Maybe it’s my imagination because I’m looking at them harder than before?

Well, I don’t know the machinations between men’s team selections but I hope Donnell made a good case for himself with his improvement on FX and his 1,2 finish on Rings and Vault. Hong needs to figure out his high bar and pommel and he’ll be the new hotness. I’m still not a Brody fan but the man is dang consistent. Hope Fred Richard makes the team. It is only 5 for men too, right? Not sure you can take a 1 eventer but that pommel score might be needed to medal.

Donnell and Brody are auto locked onto the team via their placements at this meet.

Fred Richard isn’t eligible to compete at Worlds this year because he competed internationally as a junior already in 2022. So he’s stuck as a junior for FIG meets until 2023.

Oh that is why he and a few others have stars next to their names in the results.
Too bad, he made a case for himself for Worlds this year.

WOW! USA MAG have MORE depth than WAG at the moment…insane.

I have no idea who the other 3 for Worlds will be with Malone and Whittenburg. Likely Hong and Moldauer but 5th IDK. Wiskus didn’t do well today and Walker improved from day 1. So probably one of them with the other as alternate.

Definitely Asher Hong, when he starts hitting everything its gonna be great. Paul Juda will be in the mix if healthy. Yul and Wiskus are a disappointment for me.

If Whittenberg and Hong on team need a reliable HB/PH right? Wiskus probably closest to that. Or could they trust Whittenberg to do HB and give Nedoroscik a spot just for PH?

I agree. Hopefully they can put together a team that will allow that.

A one eventer on a full team scares me to no end. USA MAG have never done this on a 5 person team.
Even when including a specialist on the team they always had at least 1 or 2 more events to do for the team.
While Naddour was primarily on the team as a pommel horse specialist, he still did floor and rings, both of which he did in team finals in 2016.
Alec Yoder was taken as a pommel horse specialist in 2018 for 5-4-3/5-3-3 but he did 4 events in TQ.

Nedoroscik only showed one event. Phillips at least did vault and high bar, though they aren’t too useful in team finals, they at least provide something on those events in case of emergency.
