They begin an otherwise world class routine like they're undergoing some kind of physical education test

And it seems like such a simple fix. I'm sure there are basic mounts that also give them some swing.

It’s so interesting that China is still a competitive team to make it on to however has not medaled in Team finals since 2016 at the Olympics and 2018 at worlds.

It's a vicious circle. They're extremely competitive for bars and beam gymnasts, commonly leaving medal contenders at home. Meanwhile a gymnast of lower standard on floor and vault would have less competition for the team by virtue of her scarcity.

It's so weird to type this now, because we were all busily writing the obituary for the China are rubbish at the power events cliche in the 00s. Looked for ages like they'd got that cracked. Even their bars specialists had valid DTYs. Then it just... stopped.

A few years ago, when I started seeing Skye at seniors national competitions, I thought that I had just remembered her name and age wrong!

Did they ever compete at the same competition (in the same division)? Or did Sloane go to college by the time Skye hit the senior ranks?

Yes, Sloane and Skye. They would have overlapped as seniors in 2021, but Sloane dropped back to level 10 to get ready for college.
