“The FIG hopes that an environment will be created as soon as possible where athletes around the world can enjoy sports safely and with peace of mind.”

Completely typical. They “hope” and do nothing to make it happen. It’s ridiculous that they can get away with a nothing statement like this but the athletes who win medals are going to have to answer questions about it in the press conferences.

Perhaps deserves its own thread.

Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country. The government doesn’t recognize Israel.
And yet Russians are allowed to compete. So distasteful. I am joining @IratePanda on the boycott.

Revoking Israelis' visas at the last minute is manipulative. A country that can't host all FIG member-states eligible to compete shouldn't be permitted to host worlds.
Well, speaking on manipulative, Thailand limited the amount of medals to 1 (one)per athlete at the SEA Games in December for the gymnastics events. If the athlete qualifies for more than one event final, they have to choose which one they will compete in. Utterly ridiculous!

As per reddit, there's an update in the matter. Link to the Hebrew language source below:

Gymnastics Federation: Provide an Explanation for Israel's Exclusion

The Israeli Gymnastics Federation will receive an answer by Monday evening regarding participation in the World Championships, when the World Gymnastics Federation will have to provide a reason for the expulsion of the Israeli delegation. The departure of the Israeli delegation has been postponed to Tuesday

The Israel Gymnastics Federation received an update today (Saturday) from the CAS that the World Gymnastics Federation and the organizers of the competition have been contacted in order to receive their response to a petition filed by the Israel Gymnastics Association regarding the decision to prevent the entry of the gymnasts of the Israel Indonesia team.

The decision on the petition will be made on Monday evening, and therefore the delegation's departure was postponed to Tuesday. The significance of the update from the Sports Arbitration Court is that the FIG will have to provide a statement of defense and explain why the Israeli team is out of the World Gymnastics Championships, unlike all other countries.

The Israeli Association, which contacted the CAS yesterday through attorney Dalia Bushinsky, asked the CAS to cancel the World Championship or alternatively to move it to another neutral country that would agree to host all the delegations, in accordance with the regulations and conventions, so that the Israeli team could also take part in the prestigious event.

Just saw this in my news feed:

Indonesia Violates International Rules by Banning Israeli Athletes From Gymnastics Championship, Lawyers Argue | Algemeiner.com https://share.google/vo1bsMXi9WdDqcBnX
"In the event that this requirement is not fulfilled, the allocation of the event would be canceled with immediate effect by the Executive Committee.”"

So -- what does that mean so close to the event? Cancellation of worlds? Its clearly too late to move to another country

It's obviously not going to be possible to move the event now.

I wonder if they've ever given any thought to remote competition options if athletes can't travel? It's just this seems to be happening a lot now. China not being allowed into Australia in 2020, Armenia being practically unable to go to Baku, Israelis not going to Cairo last year for safety reasons.

Not that it's a good solution either, throws up all kinds of problems, but one can conceive of situations where it might be the path of least resistance.

Remote could be the way to go. There's probably just enough time to sort that out.

Honestly, though, I think it's all just empty rhetoric at this point. Does anyone actually have the authority to make the FIG enforce its own rules?
