I really think not much is going to change this first year plus or minus. There are too many new and unknowns, so I can see many athletic departments keeping the athletics side of things frozen in place while they see what type of new revenue sources they can come up with before having to really balance the expense side of the equation
Athletic Directors don't like to cut sports.
This appears to be what's happening. We haven't heard of massive cuts.
California has no plans to cut sports next year.

Although

Swimming responds to House

They have suggestions that could be applied to men's NCAA gymnastics.

Create Sport-Specific excellence funds

Leverage NIL the Right Way - apparel and equipment brands can sponsor NCAA athletes.

Use the LA28 Olympic Halo

Coordinate with National Governing Bodies

Prepare for Title lX scrutiny

Many sports being cut in advance of House, including women's sports, but

"“I would suspect that the sports that are most likely going to be cut are going to be men’s sports, and I don’t say that with malice,” he said. “If you’re trying to stay compliant with Title IX, I don’t know how non-revenue men’s sports aren’t the sports that are more apt to be eliminated.”

A year or two ago I heard a sports talk radio guy lamenting that the changes resulting from NIL would kill the American Olympics movement. Many of our Olympics medalists get free coaching in college but compete in none-revenue sports.

ETA: there is a lot going on with these laws/rule changes that I really do not understand and it seems that a lot of people do not understand, but this does feel like the beginning of the end for some things I enjoy.

Clarification - from what I understand the big Title lX lawsuit regards the 2.8 billion $ backpay, not the revenue sharing going forward. The back pay part is coming from the NCAA, and will be delayed until all appeals are exhausted.

I'm sure there will be (if there aren't already) Title lX suits about the revenue sharing, which will go forward.

I kind of understand it, but really, no one does when it comes to what's going to happen.

It does feel like the beginning of the end for men's NCAA gymnastics.

Title lX makes it less bad for women's gymnastics. It sounds like a lot of mid-majors and smaller schools are opting into the settlement. Like Utah WAG probably isn't going anywhere, but some of these teams outside the power 4 might not do so well.

The Cal Chancellor did make a statement to the effect that "things would be reviewed".

I wonder if part of the reason the Howells left Cal was because House was in the pipeline, and a school like Clemson is going to be able to handle that a lot better than Cal would have.

This is a very good point I hadn't considered. Very smart on their part to jump when they did.

California has the highest athletic debt in the nation. It also has LOT of sports.
Clemson has a lot of $ and the bare minimum of sports.
I don't think the Howells left because of any immediate threat. But the future is a lot less rosier at California than it is at Clemson.

Sooners do well with Olympic Sports.
They have several NCAA champions in wrestling, their softball team is always in the hunt for a national championship and were four time champs from 21-24.
Obviously men's and women's gymnastics have many national championship titles.
Men's golf won in 2017.
Baseball and basketball have always had competitive teams.

It's exciting to see Gymnastics make the cut as one of the 6 revenue sharing sports. I do agree though, it's terrible that regular students just trying to get an education now have to pay even more just so sports can profit.

I'm expect every other SEC program will also be revenue sharing. Not as sure about other conferences, outside the top few obvious programs - Utah, UCLA, Michigan

It will likely be one big disaster for men's NCAA gymnastics. I hope I'm wrong.

The NCAA did this to themselves with crazy restrictions on what athletes could do.

I remember when female NCAA gymnasts couldn't have their names listed on the film credits of "Stick It", because that would be equivalent to being payed to play their sport.

Or when Jake Dalton had to choose between his last year of NCAA and going on the post Olympic Tour. Of course he chose the tour because he would make money.

These aren't all directly related to pay for play, but there are pretty stupid.

1. University of Oklahoma (Football)

  • Violation: Three players consumed an excessive amount of pasta at a graduation banquet.
  • NCAA Response: Each player was required to donate $3.83 (the cost of the extra pasta) to a charity of their choice.
I think one was actually self reported by Oklahoma and the NCAA didn't really care, but just the fact that OU even thought that was an issue. The players did donate.
