I'm really trying to see his point of view, but all I see is vanity and insecurity. I also think it's less flattering frankly. I can get more behind it for younger kids, as an argument to lower "barriers" to the sport, but as a professional athlete that, let's face it, is no Michael Jordan... I'm turned off by his argument

I’m sorry, this all seems so gimmicky and like he’s trying to create his ‘moment’ to be revolutionary (and bank off of it). If you’re worried about boys being bullied, address the homophobia and misogyny that’s in gymnastics and men’s sports. Changing the outfit is not the solution. And this fit just looks dumb to me, especially if it’s supposed to be a major revolution to men’s gymnastics. Like, you’re wearing a basketball uniform. Why did this need to be a big announcement with a big reveal with the sappy ‘honor my child self’ sentiment? For a basketball jersey? Nuh uh.

So in the video, his complaints about the uniform make it just sound badly tailored. Replacing it with loose clothes (that can catch on equipment, or that coaches fingers could get caught in when spotting) does not seem like a good call--fixing the fit would be the issue.

Being embarrassed about wearing tights and "pursuing a “girls” sport"--that's not a uniform issue. Wrestling uniforms are even tighter and more revealing, but it's not considered a girly sport. It's a perception issue, and frankly if feeling girly is something devastating to him, that makes him feel lesser...that's a deeper issue he needs to deal with.

I think they should 100% update the men's uniform rules.

You know... before I state this... I think I need to see this "new uniform" in routines in action. I just remember starting to compete as a kid and hating the uniform.

And for parallel bars he's wearing his shorts with loose fitting (wrinkled) ankle tights under them. I'm confused. I thought tights were part of the problem, although I understand he doesn't like stirrup pants? I'm not opposed to tights under shorts as a pants alternative, but I'm confused.

Richard on PB right now during Men's night 1, where pants are required. He's literally wearing actual tights under his shorts, to avoid ..wearing tights? The regular uniform pants would have been looser.

Confusing. I think if they had different sizing guidelines or more sizes the uniform would be more comfortable.

I don’t love it. It might be better if the color of his tights was the same as his shorts. But it breaks the line and draws more attention to leg form. With just the shorts it looks fine on floor, but I prefer the fitted top. It looks cleaner.

Also the “tight pants aren’t manly” thing is so nonsense. Track, wrestling, cycling, rowing, all the water events have very tight uniforms. It’s not just “girly” sports here.

I don't necessarily hate the idea of uniforms that are more comfortable, mentally, to wear-- I remember hearing all sorts of arguments about why women should never be able to wear unitards or tights in competition-- but something about the way he is framing this is hitting me the wrong way. I think it's how he's focussing the attention on him and being a "superhero."

If young boys are calling gymnastics a girls' sport (which of course they are, because this is the U.S. and these are young boys) that doesn't mean it's a problem begging to be solved by wearing a basketball outfit over leggings while competing as an Olympic medalist. I love Richard's gymnastics and I hope he can figure out on his own why this feels hollow and pandering.

As has been pointed out earlier in the thread, the same boys who are calling gymnasts gay slurs are also cheering while watching sports with similarly form-fitting uniforms, so it's not about the uniforms at all, rather it's about the cultural framing of a sport that's judged based on aesthetics (hello figure skating, diving, etc!) rather than by points accrued through direct physical combat, regardless of uniform (hello wrestling!). But I've now taken two gummies and that's another discussion altogether.

What countries is gymnastics considered a girl sport? Is this just in USA?

Maybe Fred feels more comfortable with more clothing over the crotch area?

The tights being bright white did not seem to match the rest of his uniform.

I told you!

btw, i don't think he got a deduction. I mean, who really cares?

Singlets do annoy a lot of guys. I think a tank top is fine. Shorts are shorts. There's no rule on how tight or baggy they need to be. He's fine for vault and floor. So this really is a nothing burger on those 2 events.

He just needs a pants solution for the other 4 events because the white leggings are HILARIOUSLY self-contradictory to his whining about "tights".

The "I'm going to save gymnastics" schtick is marketing and it comes off forced and corny. It's not going to work for him, I don't think.

I also recall as a younger gymnast trying to wear pajama type shorts on bars and actually getting tangled in the bar one day. The risk of shorts causing problems on those events is non-zero.
I get wanting more coverage in some areas though.

In Russia, artistic gymnastics is a very blue collar sport and MAG is up there with wrestling and ice hockey as one of the most macho, tough guy sports there is.

Fred Richard just comes across as having issues. I’d be very interested what his team mates think about it
