I never have clear favorites of anything so it’s a long list

2024: Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Rebeca Andrade
2020/2021: Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Rebeca Andrade
2016: Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Seda Tutkhalyan, Aliya Mustafina, Claudia Fragapane, Sanne Wevers, Eythora Thorsdottir ,
2012; Aliya Mustafina, Viktoria Komova, Cătălina Ponor, Larisa Iordache,
2008: Shawn Johnson, Nastia Liukin, Alicia Sacramone, Anna Pavlova, Daiane dos Santos
2004: Shantessa Pama, Courtney Kupets, Courtney McCool, Carly Patterson, Svetlana Khorkina, Maria Krioutchkova, Anna Pavlova.
2000: Andreea Răducan, Svetlana Khorkina, Elena Produnova, Elise Ray, Vanessa Atler,
1996: Entire Magnificent 7 minus Amy Chow (Amanda Borden, Dominique Dawes, Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Jaycie Phelps, and Kerri Strug); Svetlana Khorkina, Gina Gogean, Alexandra Marinescu, Mo Huilan, Svetlana Boginskaya, Isabelle Severino,
Elvire Teza, Ludivine Furnon, Yvonne Tousek
1992: Svetlana Boginskaya, Tatiana Lysenko, Yang Bo, Henrietta Ónodi
1988: Svetlana Boginskaya

The point is that you narrow it down to one per quad. We all have lots of favourites

2024: tbd
2020/2021: Biles
2016: Iordache
2012: Tweddle
2008: Cheng Fei
2004: Khorkina
2000: Dong Fangxiao
1996: Moceanu

That was really hard. To narrow it down I tried to go with the gymnast I most wanted to succeed so this is quite a sentimental list. Some of the quads aren’t quite right e.g. I only became a fan in 96 so Moceanu would be more accurate for 2000. I’m a sucker for those that continually update their gymnastics so Gadirova and Kinsella are strong contenders for 2024.

Honourable mentions to Slater, Produnova, Lobaznyuk, Memmel, Liukin, Pavlova, Komova, Murakami and Sarieva.

I feel like I don’t have definite favorites like I used to, so it was harder to do this for the last three quads. I think there’s just something about having favorites when you’re young. I also think I defaulted for 1992 and 1988 because for 1992 I wasn’t watching the sport yet and for 1988 I wasn’t born quite yet.

My point was that I don’t narrow anything down to just one: not movies, not colors, not food, not drinks, not gymnasts, not clothes, not songs, not happening.

Agreed. I’ve always cheered for everyone but there’s a much wider range of gymnasts I actively root for these days.

I’m always fond of gymnasts that miss out and eventually have success. Many gymnasts from those quads are still going so their story hasn’t finished yet. Also, longer careers mean your “favourites” compete against other potential “favourites” for longer so I think it’s harder to have an absolute favourite.

2004 Oops, missed this one. Was Memmel in this quad? I think I was still a 4 year fan at this point. Otherwise, Le Pennec’s UB is what I remember most from the Olympics.
2000 this quad is absent from my brain
1996 Dawes
I didn’t watch anything earlier live and gymnastics was so different, i cannot say i have any favorites here.

it’ll be interesting to see who gets the most mentions. At first glance I’m thinking definitely Biles and maybe Silivas?? I went with Silivas but felt wrong not giving Shushunova any love. I think as a whole the gymternet doesn’t recognize how Shushunova dominated her quad, and that was much harder to do in the 10 system

In 1984 she won AA bronze at the alternate Games. In '85 she nearly swept Euros winning the AA, VT, UB, FX, and bronze on BB. That year at Worlds, she won the AA, VT, and medals on BB and FX. Then in '86 (no World Championships) she nearly swept the World Cup final but got bronze on BB. At the Goodwill Games that year she fell twice in the AA but still won silver, got gold on VT, UB, FX, and silver on beam. 1987 was not Shushunova’s year (Silivas was the best in the world then) but still won a European title, as well as two World titles and medals on the other events. Obviously 1988 went pretty well for her

I’m sorry to derail. But it’s kind of a crime that we’re 33 posts in and yet no Shush mentions yet

I couldn’t think of any one, particular gymnast I was excited about seeing during that time. Think I was probably a bit less invested in gymnastics during that period, to be honest.
