Ok...this is my first time here and I have to say that my FAVORITE American Men's Gymnasts are (1) Frederick Richards: his skill and tenacity, are at the very top of current American Men's Gymnastics right now, (2) Donnell Whittenburg's resilience and perseverance is unparalleled in American Men's Gymnastics-it's time for him to make an Olympic team!!!! He made history as: A: the oldest American male titleholder in Jakarta, B: the 1st African American Male to win Gold on rings, C: the first American man PERIOD to achieve this title, (3) Asher Hong, his records and determination and grit are NOT to be discounted!!!!!!!! I think that in 2028, the American Men WILL challenge for Team Gold and even individual Gold!

Welcome @BJM123 . That's a very enthusiastic post!

I have to say — Donnell Whittenburg was already a fan favorite, but I think that the gold medal on rings lifted up his popularity more than ever. If he continues to 2028, he'll be one of my hopes for the team for sure! And the great thing is that he can do 5 events quite well, so a Pommel Horse specialist is a good balance to his position on a team.

I’ve always rooted for Donnell. I hope he keeps this up through the LA. Olympics.

We have a lot of talent. There’s a lot to love about Yul and Khoi too. Putting aside other things, Brody is also a persistent and tenacious gymnast. Now we have some great younger talent like Taylor Burkhart, Patrick Hoopes and Kameron Nelson it is going to be tougher for guys to make teams.

It just seems that American Gymnastics forgot about him. I don't understand why. That being said: that gold medal was a serious boost to his popularity. A lot of people wrote him off and it was a mistake. In 2028, he'll be 37 I believe and I really hope that he makes the team because in TODAY's American Men's Gymnastics, the older gymnasts are starting to make their voice heard.

I've tried looking him up and he seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth. I wonder what happened??
Not very sure. He was injured, and he didn't apply to be named to the injured reserved list. So that could mean he's very injured and is going to take a long time coming back, that he's taking a hiatus, or he plans to retire. I guess he's also wiped a lot of his social media? I don't use much, so I'm not sure what happened there. An interview in May said he was still training for 2028, but I don't follow MAG NCAA so I don't know much of what happened in his season at Stanford and I haven't seen any more recent updates.

I just liked his gymnastics.

Khoi had knee surgery last year. He was an alternate for the Olympic team then was back at Stanford and got the bronze on PH at championships. But i’ve heard nothing since then. I assumed he graduated when i saw he wasn’t on the roster now.

No it isn't because it seems as if American Gymnastics attempted to forget about his accomplishments. Donnell is not as featured as some of the others for no apparent reason.

That still does not make sense. Is your argument that because he is African American he is not as featured as other gymnasts? I don’t believe American Gymnastics attempted to forget his accomplishments. That’s just the passage of time and new gymnasts like the ones you have mentioned finding success in the sport. Also, you have to be able to hit when it counts to make teams which has cost him in the past.

How many MAG fans do you think remember Jacob Dalton wining individual medals in 2013 & 2014? Probably not many and off the cuff most wouldn’t be able to tell you what color or event they were on. I’m curious if without looking it up you yourself would even be able to talk about Whittenberg’s accomplishments.
