It’s not that I don’t understand the social media culture or appreciate how hard the gymnasts work and how amazing they are, I love gymnastics. When I put myself in their shoes, however, I would hate it. It’s cringy to me and I would not be able to handle it. It feels fake to me.

How is it cringy? The purpose is to give these girls a fun experience of what it feels like to be in their program! Putting on that leotard is supposed to represent what it would feel like on a meet day to get ready to compete for THAT team. Kind of like a young girl putting on that wonder woman costume and feeling like a super hero!

I think flappergirl is noting that not everyone would have equal comfort levels with this sort of thing. Especially given the amount of smiling and posting for the camera involved, it could be uncomfortable for some gymnasts who are less outgoing. For her and some others that might feel very awkward.

Having my own child just go through this process as well as many of her friends and teammates, I can say not one of them find it uncomfortable or awkward. I can confidently say that for all of them it is the singular highlight of the visit. They complain when they schedule the shoots at the end of the day versus the start of the day because their hair wont be right. Perhaps there might be one or two gymnasts out there that are uncomfortable, but I am confident in saying that would be a rarity.

I'd for sure cringe if I had to sit on a throne with a crown. That's not meant as a judgement of the people who enjoy it, it's just VERY much not my thing. Maybe there's a cultural element as well, I'm not sure.
