UK HBO is not the same as US HBO

I think with HBO’s deal with Sky ending next year, the HBO MAX launching directly to subscribers in UK in March 2026 (and a few other countries in Western Europe beginning of 2026) will have the same programming as HBO MAX in the US.

I mean it's absurd because precisely no-one is going to sign up for a year-long TNT subscription in order to watch the CWG. And the people who have it already for the football are... let's say "unlikely" to be excited by the prospect of netball, track cycling, WAG and bowls.

Exactly. It doesn't even have to be the BBC either, long as it's freeview. I know it's going back a bit but think how good the Channel 4 Paralympic coverage was in 2012, and what a positive impact it had. I still remember the first time I saw the trailer.

Yes, but different content and broadcast licensing agreements. It is extremely unlikely that HBO will buy the broadcasting license to show the CWGs in North America. They only have the UK broadcasting rights

On the possibility of using a free trial to watch the CWG (and stream the Winter Olympics?) - HBO Max launched in Australia a couple of months ago when their content deal with a local streamer ended. They didn’t offer a free trial period, but they did offer substantial launch discounts. I ended up paying for a year at that price and have no regrets as it has a much broader catalogue than just the stuff that was streaming on Binge.

CWG are on a free to air commercial station in Aus, and that channel has already locked in 2030 too.

If it is set up like last time, the streaming app also worked well for watching it on demand or replays. It was free and worked with a VPN for people outside Australia.
