I guess if they can’t afford some plane tickets, they also can’t afford leotards.

I don’t agree with self funded competitions for minor athletes. It sets a concerning precedent that parents who are in a financial position are able to buy experiences for their child to be able to say they represented the US internationally.

I’m sure that Suni Lee mentioned on social media recently that she had wanted to self fund to attend the Baku World Cup in order to submit and compete her element and USAG said no.

To me that would have been far more acceptable. An accomplished adult pro athlete funding a competition for a specific purpose.

The issue with Suni, iirc, is that the selection committee decided she didn't meet the criteria. It wasn't like USAG wasn't planning to attend Baku and Suni said "hey, I'll self-fund and go." USAG decided to send 2 WAG athletes, and Suni didn't get selected.

You can quibble with the selection decision, but the criteria was pretty clear than one needed to show a hit routine at Winter Cup. Suni didn't.
