Tashkent Challenge Cup 2025 - Banner 2.webp

Not a big roster here since it's immediately following multiple continental championships. Even Slovenia is sitting this one out.

Notably Kaylia Nemour, Valentina Georgieva, Angel Wong, and Oksana Chusovitina will be competing on the women's side while Mamikon Khachatryan will be the favorite to win pommel horse. Tseng Wei-Sheng recently won gold on men's VT at the Varna Challenge Cup.

Oksana Chusovitina will celebrate 50th birthday in style: competing at home at the Tashkent World Challenge Cup

By Scott Bregman and Lena Smirnova - 16 June 2025

Oksana Chusovitina’s legendary career will add one more extraordinary number this week.

After eight Olympic appearances, more than 30 years of elite-level competition, and medals at every level of the sport, the Uzbek star adds another remarkable number to the list: 50.

The gymnastics icon will celebrate her 50th birthday on Thursday (19 June), the second day of competition at the International Gymnastics Federation’s World Challenge Cup in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

It’s a homecoming that Chusovitina told Olympics.com earlier this year was a main focus of hers.

“In June, on my 50th birthday, we will have a competition here in Tashkent. It will be a World Challenge Cup, and I really want to compete there so I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” she told us in February. “The most important thing is not to have injuries and to stay healthy.”

Injury has been a challenge for Chusovitina – including at the recent Asian Championships where she withdrew from the vault final on Saturday (14 June) after performing just her opening vault.

“Everything is fine, I just decided to save myself for the competition that will happen now,” Chusovitina told Olympics.com Monday (16 June). “Everything is good. I will compete [in Tashkent].”

Last year, injury kept her out of competing at the Asian Championships, also in Uzbekistan. It was the final qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Chusovitina admits that injury was a difficult setback to swallow.

“This injury kind of drained me mentally because I was preparing so hard, and the Asian Championships were in Tashkent,” Chusovitina said. “I wanted to show a good performance there in front of our fans, in front of our people, but unfortunately, this did not happen, and this is what killed my morale.”

Despite the disappointment, the legend says she’s regrouped – as she has so many times in her long career.

“When I started training again, my body was thrilled that I came back to the hall,” she said. “I am training, and when I look at these children [in my academy], I become even more motivated to train. I get so happy when I train among the little kiddies. They energize me.”

She’s found success already in 2025, winning the gold medal on vault at the Baku World Cup in March and bronze at the World Cup in Cottbus in January.

While she insists she’s taking one competition at a time, Chusovitina says she still has long-term goals in the sport. Those include a ninth trip to the Olympic Games when they head to Los Angeles in 2028.

“My number one goal is to get to Los Angeles,” she said. “But there is so much time before then, so I’m not thinking that far ahead. I go step-by-step, from one competition to the next. If it happens, it happens. If not, then no. But I will try, and I will give it everything I’ve got.”
