She has really lovely technique but she doesn’t look ready yet to add the sort of difficulty to be competitive at senior level.

I wouldn’t expect her to be. She is still a Junior next year. 2011.

Which, honestly, makes her current achievements all that more impressive.

4. Do we know who Blanaru's coach is? With all the usual caveats about how people might change their behaviour in front of a camera, she really seemed to have a warm and positive rapport with her athlete. That kinda jumped out at me with all the bad news coming out of Romania.

It uproots their entire lives. They have to change schools and go back to gyms they haven't trained at in years.

It wasn’t taken out (or did I miss a second change?), but the requirement was adjusted to also allow specific jumps and leaps.

Those scores for Yang Lanbin show that the judges were told to take it easy on certain things compared to the seniors Worlds. I can easily get most of those a couple tenths lower.

BUT, he's a very precise gymnast, for sure.

It’s a bit more complicated than that.

The Deva gym everyone knows is on a plot of land right next to LPS Cetate Deva, which is a big multi sport boarding school which also has a smaller gym of its own.

Most (many?) of the girls training in the big gym are on the school’s team, but not all of them. But the ones not from Deva who are still in school are enrolled in classes at the school and they all live in the school’s dormitory.

So, you also have a mix of coaches “working at Deva” but some are employed by the school and some by the federation .

What this recent “disbanding” will mean for Blanaru I don’t know. But apart from her I think all the girls in Adela Popa’s group represent LPS Cetate Deva. So I imagine she is employed by the school, because I mean she has been in Deva forever.

My guess is that Florin Cotutiu is the coach whose job is likely in danger, not Popa.
