Team composition

National teams taking part in the Swiss Cup Zürich are made of one male and one female gymnasts from the same country.

Apparatus

Female gymnasts compete on four apparatuses – Vault, Beam, Uneven Bars and Floor – and male gymnasts on six apparatuses – Floor, Pommel Horse, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar. Both gymnasts of a team perform a routine per round.

First and second rounds

While the first round remains unchanged with ten teams, teams ranked 9 and 10 are now eliminated after the first round. The remaining teams’ points earned at the first round are carried over to the second one. Four additional teams are eliminated after the 2nd round. Four teams are left for the semi-finals.

Semi-Finals

From the semi-finals on (3rd round), the system goes to a Cup system (two teams against each other). The remaining four teams start again with 0.00 point.

Finals

The winners of both semi-finals qualify for the big final (ranks 1 and 2) and fight for the title. Both losers fight for ranks 3 and 4. The teams start again from scratch.

I'm surprised GB doesn't participate.

Wait, did we have any idea Leanne was going to compete in Switzerland?!

I never saw it announced anywhere, she just showed up on the roster. I checked USAG’s news page and they haven’t made an announcement about either her or Benas competing overseas.

Makes me feel better. It's been a somewhat challenging few months (hurricanes hurricanes and more hurricanes to deal with), and while it wouldn't have shocked me to completely miss such an announcement, trying to stay on top of gymnastics has been my way of temporarily avoiding having to deal with whatever disaster I'm trying to manage this week.

I am glad that they sent a USA team. Good for Wong and I am glad Benas got an assignment. He had a stellar 2024.

I'm glad they're sending a US team and have nothing against Wong, but why not Sumanasekera, Rose, Hang, or another new senior who could use some seasoning?

Wong finished higher than all of them at both Nationals and Trials. Since there was no selection meet for this, I’m assuming they just went down the AA line of the last national competiton and offered it in order until someone accepted.

Hang in there!
Gymnastics has brought me comfort (and angst) over many, many years. I remember more about the 1976 Olympics than I do about severe floods here in Vermont that happened in 70 and 85 or so.

Wong is also smart for this meet because she is solid on all four. If she is still doing the Cheng, they could win this.
Do you think she's kept up her Cheng? I guess I figured she would be switched into ncaa mode by now and dialed back the difficulty.

I don't know how good Baumann is, but my money is on nemor if she is anywhere near her olympic shape.

Nemour is definitely a draw for me. I hope she can increase her scores on the other three events. She was 5th AA in Paris with Biles, Andrade, and Lee in the top three so she could end up being a medal threat at Worlds this upcoming quad and LA.

Baumann is a veteran gymnast. He was not selected for Paris team though. He competed at various Worlds, Europeans, and the 2016 and 2020 Olympics.

This is Christian Baumann’s retirement meet.

I wonder if Wong sees opportunity in 2025 and is working toward it.

I mean, if she sees it that way, she's not wrong... right?

I don't see any other reason to compete elite this fall! She really cleaned up at the last post-Olympics Worlds, after all. A few small wobbles away from being World AA champ, and would've taken the floor title as well without the little stumbles on the first two passes.

Absolutely. With the format and so many people needing time off, it stands to be the most open field since, well, Leanne's last world individual medal. It's a huge chance for someone.
