Having come up in the sport in the 90s, it boggles my mind that we have narratives like this (in a good way). Can you imagine someone missing the 1992 team after being age eligible since 1990, getting injured out of making the 1996 team, and then qualifying in 2000?
The argument that there is no "next level" after NCAA (despite stats here showing that the next level for football players is basically so gate-held as to be considered unattainable) so therefore they should do easy routines to not get injured (??) is antithetical to the idea of competitive...
Because it would separate out the teams more directly and make upsets harder to happen? Like in elite back when the good bars workers had a huge leg up in the AA because the range was so wide on that event?
Vault is the only event where the gymnasts have to be close to elite level to get the scores needed to make line-ups. Why is that? Makes literally no sense to me. We all know most of them can be doing more on the other events as well.
wow, ballsy! I guess we'll see how she does in 2026 against the likes of Crain, Moreau, and anyone else from the current crop who has a similar glow-up. The five-person team next year will be an interesting bit of calculus.
