Marta did the same thing in 2015.
Nichols was the AA silver medalist at Nationals.
Nichols wasn't injured and then went up in TF on all 4 apparatus, doing bars instead of Simone.

Raisman benefitted both times, when she was clearly the weakest on bars in both Glasgow and Rio.

Nichols was robbed of the AA final and also potentially on UB. Her 14.800 in TF would have qualified to UB finals ahead of Douglas had she had a similar routine in TQ.

You're trying to tell me back handsprings aren't absolute murder on a torn ab?

No, she says it was bad. She said shampooing her hair was painful. She says she sneezed once and started crying. Aly says she can’t understand how she did any gymnastics at all with how much pain she was in outside of the gym, and Laurie says she just got through on adrenaline because she had worked so hard and didn’t want to not compete at all.

I mean, the right thing to do would have been to withdraw the 16 year old minor from the competition entirely and replace her with an alternate. I understand why they didn’t, because it’s the Olympics, and obviously she was able to grit through it, but if anything she should have been competing on less events, not more of them plus possibly an entire extra AA Final.

Especially as she could've sat out vault entirely with basically no impact on anything. No reason for her to have risked competing it in Rio at all.

Other than Hernandez who was a first year senior, every one of them went into the games as a resigning individual world or Olympic champion.

However, I’d say that the 2008 team was possibly better, just completely broken. 4 of the 6 would finish their careers having been a world or Olympic AA champion
No way the 2008 team was possibly better, injured or not

Obsessed with this salty take almost a year later lol

2008 and 2012 US teams are among the best in history, the moment you start going through their accomplishments you get a headache and need @MaryClare to pour you a vodka

You could say the accomplishments of Liukin, Johnson, Memmel, and Sacramone were large enough to overcome the lack of Sloan and Peszek’s. Though Sloan did go on to become World Champion a year later.

It’s like how the 2000 Russian team is so great because of Khorkina, Zamo, Prod, and Lobaznyuk. I don’t even remember who the other two on that team were, but it’s still a great team with just those four.

If we’re just talking Americans though I’d argue the 1996 team was stronger than 2008. None of the ‘08 team had been to an Olympics before (and none would go again.) The ‘96 team had multiple World and Olympic medals, won against much more competitive Soviets/Russians and Romanians.

I don’t think anything beats the 2024 team having two Olympic AA champions on it though.

Here I am like "wow the 2008 team really was great, wow the 2012 really was amazing, wow the 2024 team really was stacked, wow the 1996 team you raise a good point." Lol. Every time I go back and see the routines of not as famous teammates I'm like "damn, they were really good"

Peszek was also a member of the 2007 World Team and Bridget Sloan was the alternate.
IIRC Sloan was supposed to compete with Peszek as alternate but they were swapped after podium training. Classic Marta.

I’m hesitant to take a results-oriented approach when comparing teams giving the varying depth levels from quad to quad (looking at you, 2005/2006/2009 worlds), but you also have to take into consideration the size of the teams. The London and Rio Teams with a 6th member both easily outperform the Beijing team.

Even with just 5, I still think the Rio team is the best US team we have ever put up. Obviously Simone is a major factor, but even if you remove the top performer from each apparatus to account for Simone, the Rio team still on par with the Beijing team, especially if you add one of Smith/Locklear/Skinner into the mix.
