Well this has come as unexpected. Ana Barbosu has committed to Stanford. I don’t know what this means in terms of her elite career. I guess it depends who takes over the Romanian fed and how open they are to having athletes combine elite with ncaa (Lilia Cosman is at Michigan State)

The Fed is supportive:

“Ana has been admitted to Stanford University, and Lilia to Michigan State University. Corina Moroșan, technical director at FRG, discussed with officials from the two universities to establish the gymnasts’ program and objectives,” the federation announced.

“Ana and Lilia will continue their preparation for the 2025 international competitions. Congratulations Ana, congratulations Lilia, we are proud of you,” the Federation also announced.

Stanford have done very well to get an Olympic medallist!

Agree it'll be really interesting to see if and how this works with elite. It makes sense that Ana would still be preparing for international competition this year, as the season doesn't clash with NCAA and she could pick up some hardware. It's also possible it would work with 2026 Euros, if she wanted to do it and they actually manage to find a summer host (we shall see). But the logistics would be more complex once she's started.

Well, Olympic medal-ish

This is the first time I've personally heard of Romanian gymnasts doing NCAA. I do wonder if the ROM environment has been a partial motivator in going to NCAA. I'm probably reading too much in Barbosu's statement of Stanford feeling like a warm family environment, but it stands out when she was nearly bullied out of the sport.

Lilia Cosman is an American, born in the USA so a bit of an exception.
