Weird, because AINs are banned from team sports by the IOC.

Has been lifted since July. That’s why it suddenly became very crucial that UEG lifted its ban on AIN athletes. Because continental championships are the only way to qualify a full team for worlds and then the Olympics. If AIN athletes could only compete individually it wouldn’t have been such a big deal and they could have gone the World Cup route

Milana Kayumova interview. Her honestly regarding scores and international judging made me smile. Not many 15 year old international elites would say this!

Sport24's Anna Afonskaya spoke with Milana Kayumova and her mother about her experience competing at the Junior World Championships and the young athlete's gymnastics journey. We've excerpted a few excerpts from the interview; the full version is available at the link below.

At the Strongest Cup, you only competed on the uneven bars. What was the reason for that?
I had an ankle injury, so I couldn't compete on all the apparatuses.

Was that one of the reasons you didn't go to Manila with a full difficulty routine?
Yes, that's part of it.

How did you manage to put together your best bars routine in the World Championships final? How do you rate your performances?
I don't rate all my performances very highly. But I did the uneven bars routine—I liked it.

Do you think the judging was harsh? Or were the final scores what you expected?
Yes, the judging is different. At international competitions, they judge more harshly, and I disagree with some of the scores. In others, I expected them to give me higher scores.

Next year, you're moving up to the seniors. Are you eager to move up already?
Yes, I am. I've always watched the seniors, too. I only root for our own.

Do you have any gymnastics idols?
Angelina Melnikova.

Do you have any role models among past athletes?
Aliya Mustafina.

How did you get into artistic gymnastics? Why this sport?
Honestly, I don't know. My mom brought me to the artistic gymnastics gym when I was four, and that's where it all started.

Olga (Milana's mother): We enrolled her in artistic gymnastics at three years and ten months. Initially, I took her to try out for rhythmic gymnastics. The coaches there unanimously said we should try artistic gymnastics. We immediately ended up with Lyudmila Gennadyevna [Manko], and she definitely told us to start training in September.

Did you enjoy artistic gymnastics from the very beginning?
As a child, I don't know. I don't remember whether I wanted to or not. When I was going through puberty, there were times when I didn't like it or didn't want to train at all. But now I love it.

Who started your athletic career with?
My coach since childhood is Lyudmila Gennadyevna Manko. We've been working together since childhood at our gym; I've never transferred. I've only worked with her.
