The Brisbane 2032 Olympics reminded me of an Australian documentary that was filmed and aired over 6 years in the lead up to the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Several gymnasts were featured, most were 10 years old when filming started.

There’s a 1hr summary of the gymnastics parts from 1994-2000 on YouTube, but the audio and video is not good: “Spirit: 2000 Olympics (Gymnastics Documentary)”.

The later interviews were most interesting to me, as discussions included: training so many hours, injuries, retirement reasons, parental involvement in the Olympic dream, impacts to family life such as splitting the family to relocate. (Post-2020 abuse allegations were not discussed).

There is an emotional interview with Allana Slater speaking about her father’s death in an airliner crash when she was competing in the USA.

Gymnasts interviewed included Olympians Philippe Rizzo, Trudy McIntosh, Allana Slater, and Katerina Frketic (reserve). And some parents and coaches too.
