Sporting events in the US are just absurdly expensive. Compared to similar events in Europe, it's mind-blowingly insane. Soccer is really affordable across most of Europe, even to see top teams. In the US, tickets to our very mid-tier soccer league cost much more. Europeans have gotten major sticker shock with the World Cup prices. Even accounting for FIFA greed, those prices are ridiculous.
There is unfortunately vast commercialisation in a lot of men's football, and many ordinary people are priced out of the top teams in some of the bigger leagues now. It's a far cry from the working class history of the sport. But we're lucky to still have very flourishing and affordable lower league scenes, and women's football is cheaper too. So there are options. I took the family to a game at the women's 2022 Euros and it was £7.50 for kids, £15 for adults. Astonishing prices.
The Olympics are stupidly expensive these days. I saw some package "deals" for Paris that were $10,000 + for a handful of competitions plus hotel rooms. It's nuts. I guess that's why the stands are full of celebrities these days.
It's difficult with hotels, since inevitably there's only a certain amount of capacity and you're probably getting gouged. But at least it used to be the case that locals could afford to get tickets. Maybe people will try for the Paralympics instead, that's usually cheaper. Everyone I know who went said the one in London was amazing.

Yeah, it might be trials only (though I found the prices for the last one to be pretty high actually, but it was for 4 nights which cushioned the blow) but if i do get a chance to get tickets to team finals or aa finals, I'll grab them and figure it out. If qualis are insanely expensive and you have no idea what teams are even going to be in what session...probably not. My friend's mom lives outside LA and she likes me. Pretty sure she'd let me crash on her couch for a few nights for free.

Hmmm, this is my cue to start saving up for Brisbane 2032 tickets! I desperately want either gymnastics or basketball but I had no idea prices were that high.

Back in Sydney, gymnastics, basketball and swimming were the most in demand sports so were the most expensive, and ballot (local price) tickets for the finals went for $263 AUD, which is $568 in today's dollars, which is sort of the price range I was thinking in.
