Unexpected news to wake up to this moring. Jim Hartung was a current assistant coach at Nebraska, was a decorated Nebraska NCAA gymnasts himself, won gold at the LA Olympics as part of the US team, and team bronze at 1979 worlds.

“The Nebraska Athletic Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of assistant men’s gymnastics coach Jim Hartung on Saturday night. Our condolences go out to Jim’s family, friends, and everyone he has impacted during his remarkable life in gymnastics from a national champion athlete at Nebraska to an Olympic gold medalist to a successful coach. Jim is a true Husker legend and his impact on the sport of gymnastics will carry on for decades to come. Our department will provide all available resources and support for our men’s gymnastics student-athletes and coaching staff during this very difficult time.”

The New York Times had a really nice obituary - much more than you would expect to see for a less well-known gymnast in a major media outlet. In the author's own bio, he writes "If someone bounced on a pogo stick across Australia or decorated their Christmas tree with replicas of Dairy Queen treats from the Eisenhower era, I would want to tell their stories." I think this interest in a person's story comes through in what he wrote for Hartung.
