As with oh so many issues, a lot of people seem to forget that people who take the opposite view to them are just as sincere in their belief that they're obviously morally right.

You can't say it's fine for Country A to arbitrarily ban Country B's national team from an international competition for political reasons because you don't like Country B, but then complain when Country C (who you don't like) bans Country D (who you support).

Those cheering Indonesia today need to recognise that plenty of people would think it equally justified to ban Iranian footballers from taking part in the World Cup next summer, or ban Palestine from LA 2028.

It's just as well for Indonesia that no host nations decided to stop their athletes travelling to the Olympics etc when Suharto was conducting a genocide against the people of East Timor.

Exactly. This is why I am wholly against banning countries. By all means, ban individual athletes whose personal conduct falls short and countries are of course free to stage a boycott if they wish.

Israeli genocide of Palestine

There are many that feel that October 7th was Hamas committing genocide on Israel.
I can see both sides. But we also have to aware that Hamas is not taking care of the people they were elected into government to do. Using human shields and operating out of schools and hospitals, children soldiers, the civilian causalities will rise. Hamas wears their shiny uniforms for photo ops but elect to wear civilian clothing. Hamas does not distinguish between civilian death and Hamas operative deaths.

Both sides have done horrible things. Unlike Ukraine which was invaded by Russia.

We also have to remember that Russia was banned before 2022. In 2018, 2020, and 2022 Olympics Russia as a country was banned over its state wide doping system.

So they learned about it from social media, and it doesn't sound like the Indonesian federation, Indonesian government, or FIG reached out to tell them their visas were being revoked and they wouldn't be allowed to compete. Not shockingly, they're considering legal action.

Fuck me, that's pathetic. I'd have more respect for the FIG if they'd been honest and said they don't really care. This reads like they're not even considering raising a shitstorm over it. I'm not saying they should go straight to bans, fines etc, but they should at least be thinking about leverage and threats.

If there were credible terrorism threats, I doubt that the Israeli athletes would have learned via social media that their visas had been cancelled.
