Looks like we're doing this again. Both Shawn Johnson and her husband Andrew are going to be on season 4 which starts airing September 25th.

I'm less enthusiastic about these two than I was about watching Jordyn, but I'll probably watch and try to recap how Shawn's doing at least.

Season 4 with Shawn Johnson and her husband Andrew East premiered tonight.

These are the 18 contestants, listed here with their age and what they're famous for:

We start with everyone being dragged out of a van with bags over their heads and thrown on the ground. They're marched out to the middle of some empty area, they pull the bags off their heads, and do little introductions. They break into two teams, Andrew and Shawn are on separate teams.

Next they push everyone's faces in mud and have them roll around in a creek for no reason. Once everyone is coated in dirt they tell them to change into their military outfits. Then we're off to the first challenge.

1st Challenge - Part 1, each team is going in a helicopter, where they will repel out one by one into an abandoned village. They spent some time on the people who messed up the repelling and quickly flashed by a lot of the people who did it fine, Shawn and Andrew were both flashed by so I assume they had no problems.

Part 2, they have to get barrels, Jerry cans, and sacks of grain from the village and lug it all up a hill. Shawn is complimented by the staff while carrying grain. Shawn's team wins so they get to ride back to base in cars, the other team with Andrew has to run back. Brittany Cartwright quits the show during the run, says she just can't move anymore.

Back at the base, Shawn and Andrew talk for a moment at the water sink, Andrew tells her she was a tank during the challenge. Shawn says she could have done better.

Everyone goes to bed and tries to sleep, but the staff wake them all up at midnight and tell them to come outside. They all have to jump into a little pool of water in their clothes, then do pushups, burpees, lunges, and belly crawl on the ground while the staff yell at them. They ask who wants to quit but no one does, so they go back to bed and the episode ends.

They made it through day 1 with no injuries. Not a lot of time was spent on Shawn or Andrew because they weren't having any problems or drama.

That’s what those elite military units do. The theory is if you don’t quit when you are verbally abused and pushed beyond your physical limits then you are deserving. 🙄 People do know what they signed on for and can easily quit.

They do it for reasons, though. I'm not sure why you would take that training outside a military context and repackage it as entertainment.

That’s exactly correct. In the military, people are “broken down” to be rebuilt as soldiers. It’s an extremely tough process mentally and physically to prepare men and women for the extremes of combat. Using that same process for no actual reason beyond a cheap commercial one — reality tv — is imo disgusting.

And is there any proof that the "break them down then (maybe) build them up" stuff is actually the best way to prepare people for the challenges of the military or is it just "this is how we've always (aside: definitely not always) done it" ? Cuz looking at the awful mental health of our veterans, somewhere the system has gone terribly wrong. And I imaging the celebrities doing this are going to have some shit to unpack if they stick with the abuse long enough.

Is money the prize at the end of this show or is it just "bragging rights"?

Not sure what the prize is cause I’ve not watched past the gymnasts leaving lol but I believe they all get paid just for appearing on the show, because the staff have made comments like “you can quit now, you’ve already gotten your paycheck”

ETA: After googling it, it looks like there is no prize beyond bragging rights and they are all paid for participating. One article said they’re all paid the same flat fee, another said they’re paid based on their level of celebrity. I know DWTS pays per episode, with more per episode the farther you get in the show. This isn’t nearly as long as DWTS though, which takes months. This special forces show is only 10 days long if you make it to the end.

As a former member of the military and graduate of a military college I went through some harassment and I don’t think it helped any. It’s a rite of passage and brings some people closer together. Not so much for the non-white non-male persons and its frequently used against them.

These people are making money and gaining public recognition and they knew what they were signing on for. They can quit.
