Careers After Elite Gymnastics

The MDJDS situation had me pondering what careers are made by or available for gymnasts Aponsrships come and go so it’s not a stable gig. A few have enough money to not have to make a career. It seems like most others stay with Gymnastics, mostly coaching. And then there are the driven ones who go into medicine. Dr. Amy Chow for one.

There are a few who veer off into promoting health products. Brandon Wynn was doing that.

Some become outliers in Finance, Shayla Worley.

Any interesting career choices?

Probably not the kind of career you’re thinking of, but a few have gone into sex work.

My goodness, Worley is a wealth advisor with JP Morgan. Why would I feel slightly uneasy letting her manage my finances?

Quite a few gymnasts have joined the Cirque du Soleil. Lisa Sinner, Yvonne Tousek, Inga Shkarupa.

Michelle Telfer (91 WC) is a paediatrician in Australia.

Kerri Strug was a school teacher. Then she got a series of political appointments in Washington DC -- one with the office of general Counsel at the Treasury dept. Some other gig at DOJ Office of Juvenile Justice. her husband was a lawyer and congressional staffer so I guess thats what led to these appointments.

Sadly, I predict Sabrina Voinea becoming an abusive coach.

Other countries’ gymnasts have different options from the US. No gymnast here goes into politics the same way as Russians. Advisors, aides etc but none get elected.
