From reading the comments by people who know nothing except “”coached Nadia and Mary Lou” on social media you would think he was a great guy.

Yeah, a lot of that going around. I noticed it on the Athletic article. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

Unfortunately also seen a fair bit of "athletes today are soft crybabies!" and "the only ones complaining are the ones that couldn't hack it with a truly great coach!" and "no one forced them to stay with him!" Sigh. Tell me you know nothing without saying you know absofuckinglutely nothing about gymnastics.

The glowing tributes to him are sickening. There are way too many people who have no idea what they are talking about praising and defending him.

Its since been updated, but when it was first published the Athletic article referred to "Dominic Moceanu".

The Romanian totalitarian state literally forced athletes to stay with him.

I'm not sure how many 14 year olds had a choice either, even in the US.

Szabo was abandoned to the Karolyi's "care" at the age of six. Others like Emilia Eberle were only a bit older.

I absolutely get the convention not to speak ill of the dead, but there's no need to defend his treatment of these children either.
