There's also a message about "my body is not valuable only in how it is displayed to others" that might be especially helpful for athletes coming from a judged sport, and I think it gets fully missed when "in a bathtub for your viewing pleasure" is the message pop culture chooses.

That message is advanced by Dunne with her ad. That’s my objection to her. I don’t care that she’s proud of her body and shows it off. I hate the message. It brings down the seriousness of women’s sports. Yeah men can do it and get away with it but there’s already enough against women that it’s another brick in the wall that puts womens gymnastics on the other side of being considered a real sport.

There are so many reasons why NCCA women's gymnastics struggles to be considered even a real sport by fans that we definitely don't need another one lol

Haven't finished reading the thread (I know, I need to read the whole thing) but a senior in one of my creative writing classes - I'm a high school teacher - is a two-time state cross-country champion, and she's been so excited to show me her recruiting pictures from the schools she's visited. I never really thought about sports other than gymnastics having these big recruiting visits, other than the infamous wine-and-dine basketball and football ones of the past, but she's definitely having the time of her life with it.

I don't understand them having photos at all different colleges I find that odd and strange. I mean pick your team and then be proud of it. Have the photos then. The crown and the throne and make up and the arse hanging out of a too small leo is their choice but it gives the impression of superficiality to me. If they see it different no problem, crack on. But essentially repping for all different colleges is just weird. And it makes the smiles fake. Look at me I'm a Bruin or whatever when 2 weeks later you are not. That isn't genuine.

No, because cross-country/track and field athletes don't take publicity photos in crowns and thrones, or in rhinestoned college uniforms and I've honestly never paid attention to what athletes wear on their recruiting visits to other colleges. All of hers have been in full this-weekend's-college-gear on the football field, posing with mascot statues, surrounded by the team, etc. But her social media posts (that she's shown me) are the same as the gymnasts' recruiting visits - a post for each school, dressed to the nines for each school despite having a pretty good idea of where she wants to commit.
