Canada men's hockey just advanced to the gold medal game after narrowly defeating Finland (thus destroying the dream of a Finland-Slovakia gold medal match).

If I'd been watching hockey during these Olympics I'd for sure have heart problems by now.
Brutal loss for Finland. Just absolutely heartbroken.

Meanwhile, the US just steamrolled Slovakia from start to finish.

Total steamroller. Good on Slovakia for getting onto the scoreboard in the end!

In other news, the women's free skate was surprising clean and ... wholesome? I loved Ami's reaction to winning bronze. I thought she was disappointed at first, I didn't realise that she just hadn't clocked that she'd won a medal. There was lots of really good sportsmanship on display too.

What exactly is the point of a figure skating gala? Is it like an exhibition of medalists?
Yes. Big thing in FS, they all have gala routines. Gymnastics used to have one at the olympics but it was never as big a thing. I’m contemplating going, but I find “fun” rather draining

TikTok is full of American ice hockey fans who are furious with the concept of “time zones”, while the Canadians are all just cheerily getting ready for a 5am trip to the bar.
It's because our backwards ass puritans who make laws prohibit alcohol sales before 10 am (or noon in some cases). We just want to drink and watch hockey in public and can't do so in wide swaths of the country.

Meanwhile, Canada is making emergency declarations that bars open before puck drop. I'm extremely jealous.

This is becoming a trend.

When the Australian Open was on, there was a group of Americans complaining it wasnt being played at a better time for the US.

Whenever the World Cup is held in an unhelpful time zone, the UK government just changes the law to facilitate drunkenness at the appropriate hour.

Lol, well, not emergency declarations exactly. Just a one-day modification of the permitted opening hours. Minnesota (of course it's Minnesota) is doing it too!
