Apparently we are all just old and uncool here. Reddit and the blogs ranking leos love them. The gymnasts and coaches are the ones designing these backless, poorly cut disasters, so apparently they are happy with them. I'm sure there are some that hate them, but despite all the preaching of how college gym culture has changed and everything is all puppies and rainbows, no one is going to risk speaking up about it.

I don’t understand why Leo makers have zero understanding that women wear bras. I don’t know why the coaches and gymnasts don’t put their foot (feet?) down about it. Maybe they like it? I’ve never understood fashion trends

There are plenty of normal-backed leos out there though! I'm sure the teams have the option available to them. And some teams (UCLA and LSU at least) have gymnasts design some of their leos, so I guess they don't mind the weird/open backs?

Leotard makers know. Take Sylvia P for example (as they are responsible for at least one of the above). They make the competition leotards for more clubs in Australia than any other brand and their leotards are absolutely commonsense. For ages they didn’t market overseas, and had the reputation as the most practically cut leotards. It was only after they got picked up by one US elite club, and then NCAA that they started going down the strappy back path. Now a lot of their training leos have fairly open backs, but as they’re targeted at little kids and as we often train in extreme heat, that isn’t an issue. But their competition leotards here are still 100% bra friendly because they have to be. When the backs are strappy for fashion purposes, they are also lined.
