I’m tired and ill and Beans Jnr is ill and the dog has hurt her paw and the weather is grim and my childcare plans for the Easter holidays just imploded BUT the Gadirovas’ Instagram stories of the twins living their best lives at Disneyland have cheered me up no end. And if they’re doing 30,000 steps a day around the Magic Kingdom then their knees must be in pretty good shape…

And this brings up a painful memory for me. Let me set the stage. It’s the summer of 1979. I was 10 years old and visiting DisneyWorld for the first and only time in my life. I was so excited. I was going on my first plane ride and I was looking forward to having my very own Mickey Mouse ears. We were going to be there for three days. I knew from past family vacations that no souvenirs are bought until the last day. You can all see where this is going. The last day a tropical storm came to shore and we didn’t go. I was willing to risk it. I just had to have those ears, but my parents said it was too dangerous. I think I cried on the plane ride home. My only souvenirs were a painful sunburn, the Delta wings pin the flight attendant gave me, and a Mickey Mouse ears shaped childhood trauma.

I am pleasantly shocked at how classic Mykayla has gone with her kids names. Charlotte and Lewis would not be out of place in a Surrey branch of Waitrose.

I’d always thought that Utah was like Belarus in that you think you know how to spell a name, then you go to Belarus and suddenly everyone is Aliaksandra and Siarhei.

Kids who have less normal names (like Mykayla) grow up wanting to be called Jane or whatever.

It must get tiring having to constantly spell out your name (and people will still get it wrong).

I was so used to spelling out my surname that I still did it when I first moved to Russia and people would roll their eyes and be like yeah I know how to spell it

It's also frustrating to have a fairly common name with variant spellings. My daughter and I both do, and it irks us beyond reason when people get it wrong.

"Classic" and "old" names are all the rage in the US right now. It's kinda wild.

My son's name in on the list, and when he was born in early 2017 more than one person said "That's an old man name!" It was definitely not a top 10 (or even top 50!) name when we picked it.

My daughter knows so many Sophias that she's developed an entire nomenclature for them. We have Orchestra Sophia, Bus Sophia, Volleyball Sophia, Lunchroom Sophia, and a few others.

Yep, same here in Moscow . My kids know a ridiculous number of Sofias

My name is José, and here in Puerto Rico it is no longer in the top 10. My middle name is Rafael, and it is no longer in the top 10 either. It seems that now in Puerto Rico there is a move away from traditional names. Here in Puerto Rico parents are now getting trendy when naming their children, giving them rather unusual names. Here in Puerto Rico traditional names are being left behind.

Some classic names there. "Eleanor" and "Althea" strike me as names for older people, but then I remember that every Eleanor or Althea was a baby at one time. And I love "Jane"--just very solid.

Oh, yes. In addition to the preponderance of Sophias, my daughter's peer group also includes a lot of "A" names: Abby, Addy (short for Addison), Ada, Alyssa, and Ava. I have to be very careful when I'm texting the parents, who are usually listed in my phone contacts as so-and-so's mom/dad.

That's one thing about being a parent: you sometimes lose your own name. My daughter's friends simply call me S's mom. That's fine because that's who I am. I'm not Mrs. Anybody, even though I've been married for 25 years. (I didn't take my husband's name because I despise my father-in-law.) I'm Dr. Somebody by virtue of having a Ph.D., but it's not a title I use socially. So S's mom it is!

Sometimes other parents even call me by my daughter's name. I don't bat an eyelash. Sometimes I don't even notice until they apologize for the slip.
