As a Southeast Asianist (my secondary teaching field), I love them.
I agree that the smiles give them a Sanrio vibe, but that isn't a bad thing. Sanrio is wildly popular throughout Asia. Then again, I have a tween daughter and a house full of grinning geegaws and plushies, so you may wish to take my opinion with a grain of salt.
