I think Amanda Yap wins the "Gained the most fans" award here. I hope she updates us on how her exams go, I'm invested now.

Her beam routine is lovely and she is one of those people who just lights up the room and makes everybody smile. I'm very much on her new fan list.

The judges were ready to give Caylor bronze on floor with a hit routine. She basically had the score in the AA finals (top three on floor in the AA) with the low landing on the double layout.

Yeah, that was more a testament to Soviet depth than anything else. Baitova was excellent in every way. Voinea is just her own worst enemy.

I agree 100% with @QuietColours . I don't wish Voinea any harm. I just want literally anyone else to beat her. I've also taken a much dimmer view of her mother's career. Mama Voinea was never my favorite Romanian, and now I like her even less. So she could breakdance, big deal. That FX hasn't aged well, and she was pretty meh on the other three events.

Funny that Mama Voinea was usually 4th on the Romanian team - behind Szabo, Silivas and Dobre

It is sad how mismanaged Sabrina's career has been and both her mother and the RGF complicit in allowing her to chuck huge skills as a pre-teen ... I think she was throwing double layouts and a Silivas on fx when she was 11 or 12. Yet the focus on "chuck big skills" neglected the other parts of her gymnastics that are coming back to bite her now. Camelia is just out of her depth coaching at this level and a very poor ub coach. They could have brought in a ub coach - years ago - and Sabrina could have been developed as an AA contender but of course mama knew best and now they have given up on UB altogether leaving her as a 3 event gymnast.

She says she's not interested in NCAA, but I wonder if she'll change her mind.

I know Yap was a long shot in a mostly hit finals, but I would have loved seeing her with a medal. I just really enjoyed watching how she worked beam.

I hardly consider AA finals and two EFs a bummer for someone who was widely considered to have zero chance of even making the team as late a the afternoon of September 30.

You're right. I was just hoping for a podium. But, you are indeed right.

I mean it kind of breaks my heart for Sabrina a little... it's just a bit much, I guess.

She deserved Bronze this time. However much someone wants to harp on her deficiencies, Abi Martin's dancing is embarrassing.

Someone needs to get Sabrina to do a Moerz instead of that unwise triple turn. She threw a couple tenths away there. I'm not sure about the consistency of Abi Martin's wolf turn, but I think she wobbled on it every time here at worlds, so she too is probably someone who should be jumping on the Moerz train.

OMG, Amanda Yap is absolutely charming in that interview. Talk about genuine excitement. I have not enjoyed WAG at this Worlds, partly because of the depleted field and partly because of the disrespectful scoring rules, but this helps make it much better for me.

This was adorable. A lot of the charm comes from the fact that she's not used to being interviewed like this, so there's no practiced answer. It's very much a 15-year-old girl who just achieved something beyond what she expected and getting to meet people in her field she's looked up to at the same time.

If Stanford or UCLA came knocking, they would probably at least get consideration.

The judging of hop full pirouettes on high bar needs to get stricter. Most guys who do it these days are barely leaving the bar at all. Malone and Hashimoto should have been downgraded from C to B on that skill. They are only in the air for 1/4 of a turn, with hardly any amplitude.

The Winkler also needs to be downgraded whenever it's performed like Malone does, where his head is NEVER facing away from the bar. He's not doing a front flip on the skill. It's supposed to be a front flip with a full turn. The skill was upgraded in difficulty this code because a layout jaeger with a full turn is indeed extremely hard. But nobody is performing it as it's supposed to be done.

It is interesting how easy it is to readjust our expectations. Two years ago, Dulcy Caylor was bottom of the barrel AA gymnast at US Nationals, 20th place. Last summer she was solidly in the middle pack of gymnasts you would send as a B or C team to the Olympics if you were allowed. This summer she was a longshot for Worlds and we were all happy for her that she got the chance (though I'm sure most would have wanted Pease or Rivera if they had been healthy and not had such weak ankles) and now we are sad for her that she missed a medal by just a wee bit. Hope they are pacing her to be team-worthy next year but then we'll have to see if she puts off college to go for the Olympics or just hangs it all up like so many before her have.

(the number of potential new favorite gymnasts that have disappeared into NCAA makes me a lil sad. But since I don't know anyone's personal goals or health issues, I guess I am glad they took a path that worked better for them even if it meant not seeing their full elite potential)
