They are using 7 judges and averaging the middle 5. I actually thought that was coming to more competitions. It makes for slightly more precise scores that only need two decimal places AND don't truncate anything. MUCH better. I've been calling for this for years, and I am pleasantly surprised to see China doing it but not FIG.

Can't believe that Xiao Ruoteng went out with such a bang. Wonder if the judges gave him a little more than they needed to (with Zhang Boheng faltering).

Zhang Boheng was in the lead by .566 going into the 6th rotation. He would have won with a hit HB, that routine was his only major miss. It was seeded like Worlds/Olympics, so Xiao Ruoteng went 3rd to last, then Sun Wei, then Zhang Boheng was the final competitor on high bar.

That was such a bitter-sweet moment for me. I am so glad for the redemption - but you can almost see in her action on returning to the start, of, "Why couldn't I do that a few weeks ago?".
But also, thought she was going to blow out the knee on that second vault. Glad for her win, glad her knee survived.

Has Deng Yalan given any indication of what her plans are going forward?
I don't think so, but I really hope she continues through '29 (the next National Games). She's alll but guaranteed a V medal whenenver she competes at home, and she deserves a shot at another Worlds team. The mishap in Jakarta was a freak one-off.

I'm so happy with the UB results. Qiu Qiuyuan isn't quite back to her '23-'24 standard, but I didn't expect her to look even half this good. I was also thrilled to see Zhong Qi win an individual medal (I try not to get attached to juniors, but I really like her), and I'm pleased that Qin Xinyi got the bronze (really wish she'd gone to Worlds instead of Zhou Yaqin).

Zhang Boheng finally gets a win! He still looks miserable but he said the other day he feels like he's coming down with a cold, so maybe he just isn't feeling well.

Has Deng Yalan given any indication of what her plans are going forward?

祝福体操小花们_: Those who follow gymnastics will know that in the World Championships vault final on October 24th, Deng Yalan, who qualified second in the preliminaries, made the biggest mistake of her career in the most important competition of her life. She ultimately failed to complete any effective movements and received no score; she herself couldn't even explain why.

For the past twenty-odd days, she has endured immense suffering, losing her appetite and becoming rapidly emaciated. Deng Yalan said that at that time, it wasn't just a matter of not being able to sleep; she was completely broken down for many days, causing her weight to drop from 55 kg to 50 kg. She didn't know how to explain it all, and felt extremely apologetic and guilty. This was something she hadn't experienced in many years. Mistakes are normal, but this kind of mistake was beyond her capacity to handle, making it incredibly difficult. It wasn't until she returned to training that she overcame herself time and time again. Especially when she stood on the competition stage again, the pain was something most people couldn't understand. She was nervous and scared, but she didn't want these feelings to affect her.

Deng Yalan allowed herself a period of depression, but with the help of her coach, teammates, and family, she managed to pull herself together. Deng Yalan said, "If I keep thinking about my past mistakes, I'll never get over them. Sometimes my thoughts inevitably drift away, but I force myself to find someone to pull me back, to not let myself get stuck in that state. So I also have to praise myself; I think I'm great."

Having participated in four National Games, 26-year-old Deng Yalan finally overcame her own limitations. This gold medal in the vault came at just the right time, dispelling her self-doubt and giving her the motivation to pursue her next gymnastics dream. Deng Yalan said, "I still want to compete internationally. I still want to. I've earned this opportunity step by step, and I don't want to give up now. So, if I have the chance, I want to try again."
