I would have preferred just a final round with all top 4 teams. Then they rank accordingly.
Or they need to have a cumulative total after each round, so that round 2 is two event score per gymnast.

Not really a "Team" event when there is not a team total.

I don't watch figure skating. Is there anything in the way they do the mixed team event in skating that could be used or adapted to work in gymnastics?

The mixed team event in figure skating has dumb rules - the short programs are ultimately worth more than the long programs and there's not much strategy involved, which is compounded by no team ever taking the event fully serious and putting up the best team possible, with the exception of Canada in 2018 (which only happened because at that point Patrick Chan was no longer an individual medal contender, so he didn't try to "protect" himself by not competing a long program) and Russia in 2022 (which was actually stupid that year because they had 3 Ladies who could easily win the long program, so they basically just took a medal away from one of their Ladies by putting Valieva up twice, and then it ironically knocked them down to Bronze since her doping was discovered).

Try explaining to the casual fan that places 3 and 4 have a higher score than places 1 and 2 and all the other inconsistencies with that table... just show the position, this isn't helping

(caveat: I didn't watch or read the rules, just what y'all have been talking about) I think it was one of the sport climbing events at the olympics last year that had the 3rd (?) place finisher setting the world or olympic record but getting bronze. It makes some sense that you can't have 8 "lanes" to compete the climbing like you can with a foot race but in an event that is decided entirely on time, the head-to-head thing makes no sense to me at all. Can you image in the 100m final race was an elimination tournament? I don't think anyone would like that. With a judged sport like gymnastics, okay, the head-to-head thing could make sense but the number of competitors and the inability to have all apparatus available simply does not.

If the event was after all the team events and was 2 men and 2 women (and thus, a country would have to qualify at least 2 of each gymnasts to be considered for the event), with maybe 8 teams, 4 get eliminated after round 1 (maybe compete 2 events) and the final 4 compete 3 events to win the medal--that would feel like an actual competition. But if they can't figure out a way to get every apparatus in the arena, nix the whole thing. Or just cut vault out for both men and women because dumpy ftys entertain no one. (or maybe cut FX because that feels like the thing exhausted competitors are most likely to struggle on)

Yeah, vault is definitely the event to cut for WAG if are stuck with this 3-event crap. In general I am displeased that everyone only does 1 vault anyway. 1 vault is not the same as doing an entire routine. It needs to go back to 2 vaults being required, for everyone.
