Maybe that means eMjae will end up at Clemson and not Florida??

Yeah this sucks for Cal's program overall. They were on the verge of being dropped before the Howells came on board.

I wonder if we will see any of Cal gymnasts follow over. commits change their mind.

Clemson is clearly determined to have a championship level program.

I agree, but it might be a perfect storm for Cal gymnastics, poor funding, NCAA settlement, significantly reduced revenue from conference alignment. Now no more head coaches. Do you spend a lot of money on a non-revenue sport or do you just shut it down now that you don't have to worry about coaching buy outs?

Only a slight salary increase, so there must be other factors in play.

Cost of living with 3 kids in Alameda county is listed at $52.93/hr on the MIT Living Wage Calculator while cost of living with 3 kids is only listed at around $28/hr in Clemson. Or about $220K to live in near Cal and only $117K to live near Clemson. This means they would have $180K left over each year after basic living costs at Cal while at Clemson they will have $333K each year left over. This equates to a $153K pay increase or over $75K each when cost of living is used.

This is a massive pay increase for them when cost of living is factored in.

Also... years 4 and 5 they are at $275K each with the bonus.

Im convinced though, its not about money as much as institutional support. I think they projected 5 years out and where Cal will be as an overall athletic program versus Clemson, which has the opportunity to possibly break out of the ACC.

The Howells to Clemson!! https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-gymnastics/news/clemson-announces-new-gymnastics-coach-hires-46224

Only a slight salary increase, so there must be other factors in play. Facilities are a lot better at Clemson but I would guess there’s still something more for them to make the move. I’ve been hearing Cal is kind of in trouble sports program-wise in spite of joining the ACC.
Maybe they wanted to get out of the state of California. Maybe they didn't like some of the laws they have been passing there lately. California would be the absolute last state I'd want to raise children. And oh the cost of living there is ridiculous. People are leaving California in the millions for these as well as other reasons.

I am in complete agreement. While money does matter, the pride of building up Cal all the way to runner-up would seem to require something even more fundamental to make the move.

Ya, Justin has been there since college, his wife is a native, he moved his mom from Oklahoma to live with him. They have a teen/pre-teen son who loves living there. They are huge concert fans and love the bands that come through the Berkley/San Fran area.. They are not moving for quality of life changes, nor a massive increase in salary. They are moving because over time, they have a better chance of getting the resources they need to be successful at Clemson than Cal.

Sounds like you know them very well. What doesn't make sense to about this comment is that they were very successful at Cal: finishing in the top 10 4 years in row. Now they take over a program that will need to be built up similarly as they did at Cal. I will say though that Clemson's gymnastics facilities look a lot nicer than Cal's.

Yes, they were successful too! But they more than anyone know the internal state of affairs of Cal athletics. And if you know or have a high degree of confidence that funds allocated to your program are going to be increasingly reduced or taken away over the next several years, and it would further jeopardize your ability to create that success you refer to, I think you would start looking for landing spots.

I have serious concerns that Cal will still have a gymnastics program in 5 years.
