I'm shocked there's no thread for this already!

Ke Qinqin has won the AA
Zhang Qingying in 2nd
Zhang Yihan in 3rd

Qiu Qiyuan was great in qualifying, not sure yet what happened to her on the 2nd day to keep her off the podium. Zhang Yihan fell on her vault (seems like her barely-there technique is starting to catch up with her).

Prelims results on Reddit:

Thus far, I haven't seen full results transliterated into English (and I don't have the bandwidth to do it this week, sorry), but here are some results from WAG AA, V, and UB finals:

AA:
1.) Ke Qinqin
2.) Zhang Qingying
3.) Zhang Yihan
4.) Zhong Qi
5.) Qin Xinyi
6.) Zhang Xinyi
7.) Jiang Shuting
8.) Li Rongjinyi
9.) Chu Yiming
10.) Dong Yixuan
(Qiu Qiuyuan only did three events in prelims, so she didn't qualify)

V:
1.) Du Siyu
2.) Zhang Yihan
3.) Yu Linmin

UB:
1.) Yang Fanyuwei
2.) Zhong Qi
3.) Xie Guying
Qiu Qiuyuan placed fifth with a fall

BB and FX finals are tomorrow.

Some videos

Du Siyu, vault champion! (although it's a big yikes for the level of competition here that her 2nd vault is only 4.0D). I love the leo she wore today:

She hit her UB routines too. Hopefully she will finally make a world team after being robbed in 2023 and 2024, but I think she will be passed over yet again if everyone else hits at trials. Yang Fanyuwei has priority at the moment with those massive UB scores and it's hard to fit both of them on the team.

Zhang Qingying is actually the one I would leave out at the moment, she isn't looking as great this year and Qiu Qiyuan is back (but let's see how beam final goes). Zhang Yihan's beam has improved to the point where she can be used for team final, which means Du Siyu's vault becomes more valuable.

I'm hoping we get more videos, but until then, just some general observations.

I'm still trying to temper my excitement about Ke Qinqin. I can't worry too much about her medal potential outside China. Regardless of her results, she's still nicer to watch than approximately 99% of the elite WAG competing today. This also holds true for Zhong Qi, who turns senior next year (and who evidently has a younger sister who's also a promising gymnast).

I fear this is the end of the road for Qiu Qiuyuan. If she doesn't stop falling on her ostensible best event, she's not going to Worlds.

Zhang Yihan is a hot mess. I can't watch her without cringing. My 55 year-old knees and ankles are probably healthier than hers (and I'm a hopeless klutz). She seems to be trapped in a vicious cycle. She keeps getting injured because her technique isn't very good. The more injured she gets, the more her technique and form deteriorate.

Is it practical for China to take a one-eventer to Worlds? Yang Fanyuwei can't really hope for better than silver on UB (Nemour seems untouchable), but she could contribute a huge score in TF, so I dunno?

I do not like Du Siyu, but she's making a pretty strong case for herself.

Didn't see anything from Zhang Qingying, so I can't comment much, but she's having a decent competition so far.

Zhang Qingying has won the Beam final with a 14.7, while Qiu Qiyuan did a tentative routine that ended with her underrotating the double pike dismount and possibly injuring her foot. My favorite beam routine came from silver medalist Chen Ziyan:

She almost achieves series bonus for doing switch ring + korbut + roll, something that should be a lot more common. Don't know why so many people still bother doing a full turn that's worth nothing when you can do a roll. In this case though she doesn't roll backwards out of the korbut and does a forward roll instead, requiring some pause. I guess that can actually be considered a slow connection deduction in this evil code.

Zhang Yihan "won" the Floor final because of national difficulty bonus...her actual score is 12.933 without that bonus; the real winner was Ke Qinqin with a 13.2. Very underwhelming either way, but Zhang Yihan is nonetheless the overall best FX worker in China right now when you look at her average and top scores (without the bonus).

Ke Qinqin also won a medal on beam. She's consistent but doesn't have high difficulty (aside from beam). I hope she gets the DTY going. The world team is obvious for me if Qiu Qiyuan continues having trouble, but I fear they will simply not put Yang Fanyuwei and Du Siyu on the same team and instead go with a vanilla AA'er like Qin Xinyi, just to have better "backup" on beam.

I don't get why they are still lagging behind so much on FX when the new rules specifically reward connections instead of big tumbling. I haven't seen a 2.5 twist + barani from any of them, which is just criminal, especially when you're allowed to underrotate the first skill when doing a connection. They should all be doing that combo.

In this case though she doesn't roll backwards out of the korbut and does a forward roll instead, requiring some pause. I guess that can actually be considered a slow connection deduction in this evil code.

With how Chen swings her legs backwards and forwards, I don’t think this would be considered to be a connection. Therefore, no poor rhythm of connection deduction.

From a historical perspective, which gymnasts have even performed this pass? I can only think of four, with one of them being unintentional.

  • Yulia Korostileva
  • Morgan White (from a whip)
  • Laura Martinez
  • Tabitha Yim (intended tucked front full in event finals of the 2001 World Championships)

Simone Rose also competes this pass in the current COP. And I know there have been at least a couple Chinese national team members doing this pass.

Ou Yushan was also doing it, and Katie Heenan with front double full into barani layout stepout is a textbook example of what people should be training right now.

Certainly from the D panel yes, but E judges could mark it as a flawed connection or "unnecessary movement", since that little leg swing isn't choreo.

Xie Guying did a 2.5 to barani in the FX final yesterday.

5.4D, 7.633 E - 13.033

She turns senior next year, she also has a DTY (she didn't compete it here, but this clip is from Winter Training verifications at the end of March. KQQ didn't compete her DTY here either, but did show it in podium training.)

She won bronze on UB here, was 1st reserve on BB. She was 5th AA in qualifying but had a disaster on UB in the AA final and finished 16th.

6.4D, 7.933 E - 14.533 (+0.2 Bonus)
