Very few WAG. And at least one one the roster is out with injury. (Ellie Downie)

not sure if they will replace her or not.

If you had asked me before seeing the list to pick the three countries that were sending 3 WAG, I’d have grown old and died before coming up with Norway, Poland and Slovenia.

I think we will be seeing more of the countries that are unlikely to qualify a full team via continentals send individual athletes to World Cups.
Poland was 22nd in 2018 and then the federation was unable to send a full team to Stuttgart (I think it was because they didn’t pay the FIG dues?)
Slovenia was 31st and Norway 34th.

So the best chance to send individuals will be through the World Cup apparatus qualification or through individual qualification at continentals. All 3 are European countries so the competition will be much stronger for individual placements at Europeans than say Asia or Africa.

It is unlikely you will see top tiered teams like United States, Great Britain, China, Russia, France, etc attend World Cups because the countries will qualify full teams to Worlds this year easily, as a result World Cup apparatus does nothing for them except give possible experience to athletes. Canada is sending two, both of whom are likely to be contenders for their World team. Same with Netherlands and Spain. But, these are also teams that are fighting for a spot in the top 12 and as a result want their gymnasts competing more.

Going for the experience seems like a good thing. USA always seems to suffer from not sending athletes to international competitions.

I think USA ladies would send someone but it is the same weekend as the Winter Cup.

Nedoroscik and Malone are going for the men but they are already on the NT and competing at Cottbus keeps them there.

US is sending a WAG team to DTB in March and Jesolo in April. They were also supposed to go to Gymnix but that was cancelled. Appears they’re prioritizing team opportunities over individual ones.

Which makes sense as 2/3 of the national team is retired or in NCAA.

Also World Cups are no longer about Olympic qualification and now it is for World qualification for individuals…which the US is not eligible considering the top 5 teams in Americas qualify to Worlds.

So it is likely USA, Canada, Brazil going to Worlds this year…unsure who the other two will be but Argentina and Mexico are likely favorites. Peru and Chile might be outside chances to knock out one of these two.

Soooooo many other programmes are in some kind of transition phase at the moment, it’s an unprecedented situation. Plus competitions in late Feb and March are often useful for those needing competitive numbers before Euros in spring, but we’re not seeing that this year because of it being mid-quad.

Agree as well that with the new worlds qualification processes, we’ll see the world cups more obviously targeted by countries who have no realistic chance of getting full teams to worlds through the continental route.

Day 1 archived stream

Nice to see the heartfelt opening statement and minutes silence.

The new MAG FX trend seems to be straight front fulls into double fronts. Netzer gets lovely height on her front pike vault. I’m looking forward to seeing Tulloch compete his RSG on vault in finals.

I’m so happy that 2022 international elite competitions have begun.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting these in the various threads. I get a lot out of them and enjoy learning more about the COP. Your beam and floor seems to be spot on for Cottbus/Doha 👍
