Yul Moldauer captures men’s title at 2023 Winter Cup

The Tokyo 2020 Olympian was solid across all six events, sending a clear message after missing out on last year’s Worlds

Yul Moldauer took a step toward erasing the disappointment of missing out on the U.S. World Championships team last season on Friday (24 February) as he captured the men’s all-around title at the 2023 Winter Cup Challenge in Louisville, Kentucky.

Moldauer earned a 85.342 total, holding off Fred Richard (84.602) and Asher Hong (81.948). Ian Lasic-Ellis (81.905) finished fourth, while Tokyo 2020 Olympian Shane Wiskus (81.200) was fifth. All five men earn automatic berths to the U.S. national team.

A Tokyo Olympian, Moldauer began his competition on the horizontal bar with a 13.500. He moved to the floor exercise in the second rotation, posting a 14.400 for his routine that included a Randi and stuck Arabian double half-out. He, then, posted scores of 13.357, pommel horse; 14.144, still rings; and 14.250, vault.

Heading into the final rotation, Moldauer was in second, just slightly behind Hong, but after he posted a 15.121, Moldauer could not be caught.

“He came out swinging,” said U.S. men’s high performance director Brett McClure, a 2004 Olympian, on the event webcast. “He set the tone with one his weaker events, starting on high bar: nailed it. And just let it ride the rest of the meet. It was really fun to watch.”

In the final rotation, Richard deliverd a clutch high bar routine that included two high-flying catch-and-release moves for a 14.962, the highest mark on the event all day, to move into second. Hong dropped to third overall after over-rotating a double front in a combination pass. He scored just 12.203.

Fred Richard should be on the World Team this year, as well as Yul. If Richard can continue the all around consistency and strong high bar scores it is a no brainer.

Malone, Richard, Moldaeur, Hong, +1 would be the ideal team.
